email-check changes after update - question

It seems that Avast’s method of email scanning has changed since the last update and no more tweaking is needed within email clients to send the mails trough Avast.

I was kind of surprised that Avast (after the update) corrected all settings inside my email-clients by itself (it should have told I think), anyway more unexperienced and new Avast users can now be sure that emails are scanned correctly and that’s a great thing as the new method seems to work flawlessly.

Now to my problem ;D (wonder if anybody has a similar one).

To fight spam I use “mailbell” a software that checks email before my main-client does. I guess some of you use similar software. After the Avast update even this program checks the mail for viruses but can not handle/delete it correctly. I don’t know why, maybe it’s because the mails are still on the server or because Mailbell & Avast do not “communicate” correctly. Often infected mails do not get deleted (though I click delete in Avast) and I get a new (virus-found-)popup on the next mailcheck-interval of mailbell for the same mail(s)…this sucks.

My question: would it possible to somehow de-activate email check for certain software?

You know, Mailbell is a spam-checker and often deletes the infected emails anyway as it recognizes them as “spam”. Therefore it’s also not needed Avast scans there. User should have control - waiting for answer.

This already happend with the first version of 4.5 not just with the latest. Where have you been? ;D

And this is only for NT based systems, not on 9x / me systems.

it should have told I think
It has been told. Here on this board, on the website and on many other websites.

Strange because I use the autoupdate, maybe I simply didn’t recognize? Whatever, I think as long as the software has a site-independent update function it should inform the user before changing ANY settings of other people’s software. ;D …but no prob as it’s for the functionality.

Anyway, ideas on my problem?

I odn’t know mailbell nor do I use any spamkiller util myself. I have no need for them. The build in filter options in my mail clients do the same job, so I don’t have the need for a third party application.

When using a spamkiller util you get this:
mail server > av > spam killer > email client
or
mail server > spam killer > av > email client

atm I can’t remember exactly how it is done, but you have to make some changes in the settings of your setup. It is explained in some other threads here on this board. That I know for sure.

Use the search option on this board and use as keyword(s) the name(s) of a spam killer. You should be able to find it that way.

It is possible to exclude certain process from automatic mail scan. Please follow the instruction in this thread: http://forum.avast.com/index.php?board=2;action=display;threadid=9310. You can exclude more processes at the same time, in this case, separate their names by comma.

Use this wisely, you can always be infected even through your anti-spam software, it’s an email client just like any other - just only it’s not as popular as outlook, so you’ll probably have to wait a few months/weeks/hours before someone will write a virus for mailbell. :o

Lukas.

To your ‘mail delete’ question. Mailbell antispam downloads your mail from pop3 server, then checks it and then some mails which could be considered spam deletes. So it must have the mail in it’s hands to be deleted off server. When you click delete in Avast!, the virus is deleted from the mail and subject is modified to reflect the presence of a virus, so the mail might not be later recognized as spam by mailbell and will not get deleted from the server.

Yeah, all you say makes sense, didn’t think about that. ::slight_smile:

Probably the best solution would be to simply BUY avast! and get rid off the popup. ;D

Certainly a good idea! Anyway, I don’t see how Professional version of Avast! might solve this particular thing. On the other hand configuring mailbell to delete all mail with “INFECTED” in their subject might help you delete those spams/viruses even before they enter you mail client.

Which I already did. I don’t know when it happens (the double mail thing) but I have to watch out for it. Anyway I’m going to buy avast! as soon as I have my ordered credit card. I think I’ll purchase the 2-year license.

Welcome to the avast Professional happy users group ;D
You won’t regret for sure.
