I recently had a problem receiving POP3 emails using Outlook Express on a broadband connection. I then tried Mozilla Thunderbird, but had the same problem. The (slightly edited) error message I received from Outlook Express is below:
There was a problem logging onto your mail server. Your User Name was
rejected. Account: ‘myaccount’, Server: ‘mail.myisp.com.au’,
Protocol: POP3, Server Response: ‘-ERR No POP server defined. Use real
server address instead of 127.0.0.1 in your account’, Port: 110,
Secure(SSL): No, Server Error: 0x800CCC90, Error Number: 0x800CCC91
After I turned off all on-access protection on Avast, the problem disappeared. Any ideas why this is happening, and has anyone else been affected similarly?
I’m using Windows XP (latest updates) and Avast 4.5.561 Home (Nov 2004 build), with VPS file version 0505-2. I’m not sure why it would do it, but I suspect the problem only started after the VPS file was updated. It looks like it was only after that update that the problems started occuring.
