In Avast Free Home Editon 4.8 when you got a email a blue and yellow
bar would appear at the bottom saying it was scanning the emails.
I have since updated to Avast Antivirus Free 5.0 but now when I get
emails I dont see any anything saying it is scanning the files?
Am I missing something in the settings or has this option been taken out
of version 5.
cheers

For Further details about the above …when you went to the Mail Scanner and then Customize Settings…There was a checkbox to show detailed info and when that was checked the box would
pop up at the bottom of the screen whenever a email was sent or received but i dont see this see
setting with Avast 5.0.
There were more complaints about this function in 4.8 than I can shake many sticks at. That is strange because in 4.8 this option was disabled by default and after ‘they’ enabled it were screaming blue murder about the on-access scanner messages.
So there were few fans of this option in 4.8, you seem to be one of the few ;D
no, gotta say I didn’t like it very much either, especially with the standard shield ;D well, the good thing IIRC is that you could activate or deactivate that individually on each shield…
Well I mainly liked it bcause it at least gave you a visual clue
as to what was happening and being downloaded into your
email program. With Avast 5.0 you see the orange ball spinning
in the taskbar and hope that it is scanning something.
I never had it enabled on any of the other scanners otherwise
you would have messages popping up left right and center.
Other than that I must say I am liking Avast 5.0 and seems to
run very well with a lot less memory being used than before.
Anyway thanks for all the replies.
The main area to be concerned with is outbound emails (can be sent without using your email client) rather than inbound emails. Inbound emails coming in to email client requires your permission, either you manually downloading email or having set it up to download automatically every xx minutes. I would suggest setting the Mail Shied, Expert Settings, Sensitivity to High, more for the additional outbound protection.
Once you have everything set-up as you like it and emails are being scanned, check the Real-Time Shields, Mail Shield and you can a) see a traffic analysis and b) see the emails scanned/infected counts, etc. So you should see everything is being monitored/scanned.
Yes I can see that my emails are being scanned when you go to
the Mail Shield but I thought it was a bit easier when it just popped
up at the bottom of your screen. But I am happy with the way it is
working now and I will give your suggestion a try.
In case you hadn’t noticed, when avast! 5 scans an email message
it puts an indication in the message headers. If you look at the
headers/source of an incoming message you will see this at the end
of the headers:
I just noticed this feature was gone. I really miss it, because the old info bubble gave header details, functioning as a convenient built-in email notifier, which is one thing Thunderbird is deficient in.
