HI, You guys were so helpful with helping me deleting a boatload of virus’s off of my computer yesterday I thought I’d ask for help again. My DH has a a computer that he had Norton on that he used for work stuff. HE has it come up with the same emails repeatedly that say they’re infected. He’s deleted them but they keep coming back again and again and again. The SAME ones. Now, he’s took Norton off and put Avast on and it doesn’t even catch the files at all but the same mail comes back again. I’m talking 150 pieces of mail here. He’s reinstalled Norton twice and can’t do it again so I can’t tell you the pathway of where it is or even if this is a real virus. Have any of you heard of such a thing before and do you have any suggestions of what I can do to find it on my own? HE has has outlook so this all seems to be stemming from Verisign somehow. He’s been trying to rid himself of this for weeks now.
Thanks,
Kathy
Hi,
I’m not too clear on the scenario you described, but
1st some general info on Mail-viruses:
Receiving an email alert stating that the virus came from your email address is NOT an indication that you are infected
as the virus often forges the from address:
- somewhere in the infinite reaches of the universe/internet, a PC is infected with an email-worm/virus AND has his Email-adress saved somewhere.
The Worm then sends out itself with fake sender-adress; a Mailserver-Scanner then wrongly interprets this virus-mail as coming from you, and sends you the above (inappropriate and useless) reply.
what does a full scan with updated AV-Scanner say ?
if it says your PC is clean, it most probably is
Read the virusinfos (see below) on e.g. netsky
For the future:
apply all Windowsupdates, and configure your Mail-Program and Web-Browser more securely (see board-search above)
-
What does a full scan with avast (thorough scan, archive scanning enabled) say on his PC…? (make sure that Norton is COMPLETELY removed before installing avast, if you want to install/use the avast AV-Shield)
-
Also have him check the PC with Onlinescanners TREND & RAV
(see the link “VirusRemoval” below in my sig. for details…) -
he should get the report/Log from hijackthis, and post it here for diagnosis: → http://tomcoyote.org/hjt
-
What Windows-version has he got ? are all Windowsupdates applied… ? CHECK!! → www.windowsupdate.com
