Recently I received an email from an unknown source. Since I received it but did not open it does Avast scan the email before I receive it or does Avast only alert for trouble after I open it? Thanks

The avast Mail Shield redirects email into its localhost proxy, where it is scanned, if an email is infected avast alerts, if it is clean then it passes through the proxy to your inbox, etc.
