If I recall correctly I used to observe the Mail Shield scan count go up when I would receive emails. I have had to set up my Outlook Express again because I needed to “restore” my computer and now while I do receive emails OK the Mail scan count for the Avast Mail Shield no longer increments.
Shouldn’t the Mail Shield count increment if I’m receiving NEW email?
does avast scan them at all…are these mailaccount with SSL conection?
you can test by sending the eicar test file in mail

Thanks for the reply.
Because Avast does not increment counters or show anything on the mail shield graph I did not think that Avast would do anything sending the “eicar test file” and sure enough the email arrived but Avast did not alert to any virus.
Like I asked before: Shouldn’t the Mail Shield count increment if I’m receiving NEW email?
It seems to me that as long as Avast isn’t incrementing any “scan counts” in the email shield and the graph shows nothing of course (and of course the Avast ball does not spin either) THEN Avast IS NOT scanning emails, RIGHT?
And it appears the “eicar test file” sent to test this out proves this point.
Yes I am using SSL connections, and I have added the accounts in the “expert settings” of the email shield for “SSL accounts”.
It is my desktop computer that I just recently had to restore and re-enter all of my email addresses in Outlook Express that DOES NOT SCAN FOR EMAIL.
My laptop works just fine using Outlook email program and Avast DOES increment the mail shield count upon receiving email as contrasted to my desktop that DOES NOT.
There must be a setting I am missing but I have no idea what that might be.
Thanks for the reply and link.
I had entered the SSL info in Avast as I stated before but upon looking at the instructions in the link you provided in detail I noticed that while in the “advanced settings” for MS Outlook (which I’m using on my laptop that works) are CHECKED in other words the SSL settings are left alone (remain as SSL connections)using MS Outlook but for some reason the “advanced settings” for Outlook Express (OE) require the SSL to be UNCHECKED apparently (I don’t recall needing to do this with OE before).
Once I UNCHECKED the SSL options in the “advanced settings” in OE then Avast starting scanning my emails like I expected.
The instruction #4 that has to do with ONLY the OE email program is what I needed to do which states this:
- In the account settings of your mail client software, disable encryption and set the port numbers to the default values for all protocols using an encrypted connection to access the relevant e-mail accounts.
As far as the BOLD part it seems to me it should be saying “unencrypted” instead of “encrypted” because for one thing the port values will change based on whether it is “encrypted” (checked) or NOT “encrypted” (unchecked) and by ONLY UNCHECKING these SSL options solved my problem apparently thus “UNENCRYPTED” is what the connection for OE is using and not “encrypted”.
As I understand it Avast is doing the “encryption” instead of the email program (but interestingly even so MS Outlook is SET WITH “encryption” but on the other hand OE is SET WITHOUT “encryption”).
As long as my both my laptop using MS Outlook and desktop using OE is getting email scanned is all that’s important, SO THANKS VERY MUCH FOR YOUR HELP… PROBLEM SOLVED!!!
your wellcome…
and if you test again with the EICAR mail…it should now be intercepted
