emails

Suddenly avast email warnings are appearing on my screen. I did a complete scan with avast and it found 35 viruses most of which were in my memory. Avast asked what i wanted to do and i answered “move to chest” even the ones in windows files. I hope this is correct. I did another full scan and avast replied no viruses found. Yet i am still getting the email warnings on my screen. I click “don’t send” hope that is the correct thing to do. What is wrong? Do i have still have a virus that avast can not find?

What are the email warnings ?

You have done the right thing, ‘first do no harm’ don’t delete, send virus to the chest and investigate.
There is no rush to delete anything from the chest, a protected area where it can do no harm. Anything that you send to the chest you should leave there for a few weeks. If after that time you have suffered no adverse effects from moving these to the chest, scan them again (inside the chest) and if they are still detected as viruses, delete them.

If you can give a few examples of the file names and locations of the files you sent to the chest ?
Check the avast! Log Viewer (right click the avast ‘a’ icon), Warning section, this contains information on all avast detections.

The fact that you are getting outbound emails Iit would appear you have an undetected trojan spambot on your system.

If you haven’t already got this software (freeware), download, install, update and run it, preferably in safe mode.

  1. If using winXP AVG anti-spyware (formerly Ewido) Resident scanner during trial On-Demand after trial ends. Or SUPERantispyware On-Demand only in free version. Or Spyware Terminator Resident scanner. Or a-Squared free On-Demand only with free version(if using win98/ME).

how do i view what is in the “chest”?

okay i viewed the chest and sent the warnings to awil. it did say error on sending some of the files{system files} but the rest were sent. i tried downloading the spyware you suggested but it didnt run.

Which one? Are you donwloading and running or saving the setup file to disk?

SUPERspyware tried both way6s. when choosing run it just disappears when i chose save it did to desktop but will not open. it says not a valid win operation.???
ugh!

It could be either a bad download or the virus that is blocking the correct installation.
Maybe you should try on-line scanning. Try BitDefender.

Kaspersky (very good detection rates)
ESET NOD32
Trendmicro housecall
AVGas (does not necessary if you have AVG antispyware installed)
F-Secure
BitDefender (free removal of the malware)
HitmanPro (multiply scanners)

AVG Anti Spyware only found tracking cookies and one ad ware all medium risk. That can’t be what was causing the avast email alerts!? right?

No, tracking cookies are really a negligible risk and not the bid deal AVG-AS makes of them.

You can try the on-line scanners, but I think this may be hidden by a rootkit, which seems to be more common with these spam trojans.

Also see, anti-rootkit, detection, removal & protection http://www.antirootkit.com/software/index.htm. Try these as they are some of the more efficient and user friendly anti-rootkit tools.

Like David said, no.

i ran spybot and it found two in the registry keys. when it went to fix the problem it said it couldnt continue due to memory and then an error(application) message and it shut down before fixing problems. Now spybot and adaware wont even run. So i tried a system restore and it wont let me do that. Any suggestions?

Can you run spybot at safe mode?
Will it help if you install AVG antispyware?
