error 0000A474

Hmm, I don’t seem able to simulate the problem.

So, if you simply start the avast main interface and start scanning e.g. your C:\ drive, does it report all files as unable to scan with the error code A474? Or is it just the WebShield?

I think I may have found the reason for these messages. Upon what services does Avast depend? I had been following a tweak guide and had disabled a number of services, including Com+. I started getting DCOM related errors in the system event log so set the COM+ back to how it was before. Since then Avast seems to have stopped generating the a474 errors.

Sorry I can’t be more specific but for some bizarre reason I hadn’t made a note of the services I amended (I should be shot at dawn).

avast! Antivirus depends upon avast! Standard Shield Support and [b]Remote Procedure Call - RPC[b].
avast! iAVS4 Control Service has no dependencies.
avast! Mail Scanner and avast! Web Scanner depend only upon [b]avast! Antivirus[b] service.

RPC depends on no one but almost everyone depends upon it.

Right, RPC and RPC locator were 2 that I disabled. When I started seeing errors I reset RPC to automatic and that seems to have cured it. It may not be the same problem but it’s worth trying.

I’m very surprised you’ve killed RPC… I think you’ll kill Windows doing so… It’s a must have service.
Anyway, who knows. RPC Locator could be, indeed, stopped.

Strange as I was following guidelines for tweaking the services. Oh well, that’s what I get for trying to optimise.

I hope this answer resolves crofty59’s problem too.

HI Vlk
I did a quick scan on drive c no errors
I only get this error on web shield.

Hi digicammad

When you change these settings do you have to reboot
I disabled RPC locator no difference.
Not game to disable Remote Procedure Call . Quick question how do you disable it ?
As this doesn’t show up the same like RPC locator.

When it comes to computers i am not the sharpest tool in the shed!!!

cheers

It is controlled via the services control panel. If you right click and choose properties you can then set it to auto, manual or disabled.

Ian

I strongly recommend against disabling the RPC service.

Yep, it was a mistake, I was intending to disable the RPC locator service.

Hi Ian
I am to nervous to change it just in-case it kills windows on me.
Thanks anyway

Cheers peter

Hi Vlk

Thanks for for your advice about disabling the RPC service.
I was very nervous any way, you have just made my mind up to leave it alone.

By the way Avast seems to be working fine except for the error i keep getting, should I be concerned about it or just clear the logs every so often.
As I get the error in the logs concerning web shield only.

Cheers peter

Sorry Peter I wasn’t telling you to change the RPC service, I was telling you to check that it wasn’t disabled :). I had mistakenly disabled mine and it seems to have been the cause of my A474 errors, so it is worth checking that your services are all okay.

Take a look in the event logs to see if you are getting any other errors which could point to a problem on your machine affecting Avast.

Ian

Hi Ian
My mistake i miss understood, so all the confusion was on my part!
The RPC service, is in automatic.

I will certainly checking my logs but as of yet i can’t see anything out of the ordinary. and thanks for your help.

Cheers peter

Thanks Vlk

You have made me a happy camper 8)
No problem sending the zip file

Cheers

Huh, seems I spoke too soon! Sorry!
(I was assuming the problem got simulated here because I saw the entries in the Error.log and Warning.log files - but these were in fact from YOUR machine :)) ;D

Never mind.

Anyway, your log files only indicate the problem on Nov 28th (yesterday) between 3:45pm and 9:02pm. So, I’m wondering… have you purged the logs? Or how come the first entry is from the 28th when you in fact started this thread on the 27th…

Also, is it possible that the problem started happening with the latest virus database? (released on Nov 26th).

Thanks
Vlk

Yes I purged the logs sorry.

Yes it is quite possible it started from the last virus database? (released on Nov 26th), as I only noticed them on the nov 27th.
As i did a scan with a2square malware and they leave errors etc in the logs. I normally check a few just to make sure and that is when I noticed error 0000A474 .

Cheers

Did you only purge the avast log files or the Windows Event Log as well?
Because avast writes them to both these locations so it might be possible to look it up in the Windows Event Log.

Also, do you use the avast mail scanner?

Sorry I purged Windows Event Log as well

I have just checked Windows Event Log and the only reference to avast i can find is in Antivirus in Windows Event Log

I use the avast mail scanner rarely. But I havn’t used it for at least a month.

I am going to have to go soon got to get up early

Cheers

Does updating to the latest virus database (0548-0) resolve the problem?

No it doesn’t

Still getting it in avast log viewer and also the Windows Event Log

Cheers
