I had avast fro like 2months now and i suddenly have a problem with avast and i can’t open it when i open it it starts the regular memory check then i get the error message
" Application cannot load skin.Fucntion “usiGetSkin” falied…" i am confused i tried to look up the problem and tried to go to
start>control pannel>add/remove>avast>change/remove>then repair but no luck
i also tried
Select START → RUN…
In the row write this command:
c) If you have Windows XP:
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\REGSVR32.EXE ACTSKIN4.OCX
Press OK (or Enter).
Message saying that the file was successfully registered should
appear.

Now should all work properly.
but i still get another error message sayin
DllRegisterServer in ACTSKIN4.OCX failed
Return Code was:0x80020009
I also tried this but don’t know what to do
Find the C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\avast4.ini
Open it and scroll down until you see the ODBC line usually under the heading [Common]. Change the Database=ODBC to read Database=XML
Can you post the results?

when i go find the file and click it i get a screen sayin to find the approprite program and i want to know what to do can anyone help i have tried right about everything ??? :-[ :-X :-\
Changing the database method doesn’t have any efect as the ODBC database method is no longer used.
For some reason some people are unable to run the third party skinning tool and in that case you can use the non-skinned interface. Right click the avast icon, select Program Settings, Common and uncheck the references for skin use, see image.
Whilst this doesn’t solve your problem it will at least let you run avast.
You could use the ashsmpl2.exe file to open a skinless interface.
You can edit the avast4.ini file (using any text editor) C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\avast4.ini (I would advise you copy avast4.ini before editing it, just in case). Look up the [UserInterface] section, and add the following entry: StartWithSkin=0
ok i am a little confused ok so i look up C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\avast4.ini and when i find the file on the search tab what do i do sry if i am kind of slow with this :-\
ok i looked up the file and when i right click it the only options i get are:
opencotaining folder
open
cut
copy
create shortcut
delete
rename and properies
and this folder does not even have an icon it looks like a page with a really small windows and a cople of really small figures then when i try to open it i can’t it tells me that my windows don’t know what created it ??? i am soooooo confused right now!!! :-X ??? >:( :-[ :-\
Sorry the location is slightly different from my previous path it should be, C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\DATA\avast4.ini
You may not see the .ini file type displayed if you don’t have certain folder options set to show known file types. If that is the case you will see only avast4 (without the .ini), but the Type column will show the file as Configuration Settings.
If you click open, it will probably ask what program to use to open it (e.g. your comment “it tells me that my windows don’t know what created”), you need to select Notepad or your own text editor. However, I feel you should have other options and certainly send to, see image.
You can also hold the Shift key down, whilst right clicking the file, that should give you the option to open with, it will also show some programs and notepad should be one of those.
Now when you right click the avast icon, select Start avast! Antivirus, you will get the skinless interface (Simple User Interface, (SUI))and not an error message and be able to run on-demand scans, etc.
Now would be a good time to browse the avast help file and become familiar with it to help you get the best from avast. From the SUI, menu, Help or press the F1 key. Or windows Start, All Programs, avast! Antivirus, Help.
