Error, Avast 5 - "aswAux,dll is not a valid windows image"

I upgraded to Avast 5, but I can’t start it; I keep getting that error message: “Bad image; aswAux.dll is not a valid windows image.”

I tried uninstalling and reinstalling, but I got the same message. (I re-downloaded the upgrade before uninstalling and reinstalling.)

I ran my registry checker/repairer (Registry First Aid), but that didn’t change anything.

I have no antivirus protection now. I sent a message through the support form, but so far no techie has responded.

Does anybody have any idea what’s causing this problem and how I can fix it?

Thanks,

Dafydd

How to Fix Aswaux.dll Errors

Company : Alwil Software

Software : avast! Auxiliary Library

The aswaux.dll error message could apply to any program or system that might utilize the file on any of Microsofts operating systems including Windows XP, Windows 7, Windows Vista, and Windows 2000.

You can fix a aswaux.dll error and there are many ways to do it. A registry cleaner program can help by removing invalid aswaux.dll registry entries that might be causing the DLL error.
Try Ccleaner or Eusing, and reistall avast

Never heard of a similar problem… what is your operating system?

Igor, my operating system is Windows XP, SP 3. Mark-d-l, I ran my registry checker, Registry First Aid; but after I finished, it was still doing the same thing – it still says “aswAux.dll is not a valid Windows image” when I try to run avast 5.

I don’t even know what “not a valid image file” means. Is that a standard message for DLLs? I’ve never seen it before.

By the way, I posted this response yesterday; but when I checked today, it had vanished from this thread!

I finally received a response from tech support; but all they did was tell me to uninstall and reinstall avast 5… which, in my first tech-support e-mail to them, I told them I had already tried. So far, company support has been singularly unhelpful; I’m desperate for some help through the forums.

Thanks,

Dafydd

I just checked this thread immediately after posting, and my last response is definitely in the thread. So if it disappears again, I’ll really be stumped!

Nobody has any thoughts or suggestions? If I can’t resolve this problem, I’ll have to scrap Avast and find some other antivirus… and that would be a shame, since most reviews say that Avast is the best one!

But if I can’t get it to run at all, because of some silly software error, then obviously some antivirus program that works is better than the best antivirus program – which doesn’t work.

  • Download the latest version of avast, 5.0.594 http://files.avast.com/iavs5x/setup_av_free.exe and save it to your HDD, somewhere you can find it again (if you didn’t save your last download). Use that when you reinstall.

  • Download the avast! Uninstall Utility, aswClear5.exe find it here and save it to your HDD (it has uninstall tools for both 4.8 and 5.0).

    1. Now uninstall (using add remove programs, if you can’t do that start from the next step), reboot.- 2. run the avast! Uninstall Utility from safe mode, first for 4.8 if previously installed and then for 5.0, once complete reboot into normal mode.- 3. install the latest version, reboot.

DavidR, thanks; I was finally able to get it to install properly.

One of the problems is that the installer is also an uninstaller… but a shoddy one! It appeared to uninstall, but it must have left weird hooks in the registry or somesuch.

I had to use the dedicated, more powerful uninstaller, aswclear5.exe. That one was abrasive enough actually to scour away the last remnants of the failed installation; afterwards, I was able to install.

So (1) the installer should not include an uninstaller, unless (2) it’s the same uninstaller as aswclear5.exe.

Thanks,

For the greatest majority the uninstall works without problem, as for separating the two functions this is common across virtually all programs I have ever used. You install the program with an installation file that include the uninstall routine that is used when you use windows add remove programs, it is that simple.

If you have a failed or corrupt installation then the uninstall may fail and that is why there is a dedicated uninstall utility.
