Brand new here! I just downloaded this for the first time tonight and am already have problems getting the updates. I keep getting this same message: error: cannot connect to server. I also have malwarebytes - could this be a problem? Any help will be appreciated - thanks!!!
- Set avast! to: Direct Connection (No Proxy)
- Reboot
If this is for manual update attempts also then what Asyn suggests only works if the auto updates are blocked (early in the boot). Another common cause of this is something firewall or previous AV blocking avast.
What is your operating system and firewall ?
Does it allow avast.setup internet access ?
- If it does delete the entry for it and do a manual update, this should force the firewall to ask permission again.
Have (or did) you another Anti-Virus installed in this system, if so what was it and how did you get rid of it ?
MBAM shouldn’t be a problem, even if you have the MBAM Pro version ?
Thanks - I will try this when I get home tonight. I am running XP and just removed McAfee yesterday - it was giving me too many headaches and had allowed the FBI moneypack virus to get through which took me almost two days to remove from my computer. I’m assuming now that the only firewall is the Windows firewall.
Again, will try this tonight and see if that doesn’t take care of the problem - thanks again for the suggestions - have a great day
You’re welcome.
Please report back.
You’re welcome.
You should be able to find a McAfee removal tool here:
- Uninstall possible remnants of previously installed AVs see, http://singularlabs.com/uninstallers/security-software/, this has a collection of manufactures removal tools, so that should remove any remnants, registry, etc.
Thanks for all the information - I ran the removal tool for the McAfee - now when I click on update, it just sits there - where is the proxy - not to sound stupid but haven’t a clue where to find that - you all are great for trying to assist me with this - many thanks.
avastUI > Settings > Updates > scroll down to Proxy Settings and set to Direct connection (no proxy).
Though this won’t resolve manual update problems as I mentioned before and why I asked about your OS and firewall you used.
If it was McAfee firewall, did you reboot after using the removal tool (if not do so) ?
That’s me for the night, 2am here in the UK.
Again thanks for all your help - all seems to be working just fine now !!
You’re welcome.
