Although the installation was successfully completed but running the updates isn’t working. I tried reinstalling the program but still had the same problem.
Im using a windows xp professional 32bit SP3
Previously used Bitdefender trial version & AVG free edition but I already run several registry cleaners to make sure no traces of them are left on my computer.
Im also currently using ZoneAlarm Firewall. Even tried turning off my firewall before installation but still had the same problem.
Hope someone can help?
Uninstall avast from Control Panel (if possible). If, for any reason, you can’t run it, try booting in Safe Mode and doing it from there. Anyway, boot after that.
Run the avast! Uninstall Utility saved on 1. If, for any reason, you can’t run it, try booting in Safe Mode and doing it from there. Anyway, boot after you’ve run it.
Install avast! using the setup saved on 2. Boot.
Register your free copy or add the license key for Pro.
I was actually installing the latest version (Avast Free antivirus 5.0.677) which i tried to download from avast.com, but im always being directed to cnet download.com everytime i click the download button. I also uninstalled Avast using revo uninstaller which I know by far a very reliable unistaller software(does not only uninstall the program but also cleans up leftover files and registry items). Also run some registry cleaner programs just to be sure no more trace of Avast is left on my computer. Then I rebooted several times and tried installing again but I always get the same error. Any idea? Thanks
This is a myth… Sorry, Revo Uninstaller is a good application to remove software that does not require a boot in between. For antivirus and firewalls it is the worse way to follow…
ow, now my updates working. I only changed my proxy settings to direct connection(no proxy). But im still bugged by that unknown error on the installation setup. Thanks anyway, I’ll keep posting if something came up.
I am also having this problem, I had to install an old version of avast to get avast working. I have done everything listed above and nothing would work. Avast was being installed on a new install of windows xp pro with all of the updates installed.
Download the Avast Uninstall Utility, aswClear5.exe http://www.avast.com/uninstall-utility and save it to your HDD (it has uninstall tools for both 4.0 and 5.0).
Disconnect from the Internet at this time.
Boot into Safe Mode (hit F8 repeatedly) and run the Avast Uninstall Tool.
Thanks for the reply, but there was no need for the uninstall as this was a new install of windows os and avast never was on this desktop. So I formatted the computer and started from scratch to see if the problem happened again and as instructed I did what you said. I still come up with a install error, but seems to only happen after I install the latest java update. So I formatted again installed everything the same but this time I did not install the latest java update and everything is working fine. Not sure how they work together, but avast free addition installed fine without the latest java update for me. Just FYI.
I agree with you on Java, I couldn’t understand why. I have no other software installed on the desktop except office 2007, adobe reader and all windows updates. Firewall is disabled on microsoft and so is auto updates for microsoft. No anti anything except for avast. It was a virgin install. Oh, and no toolbars either. Not sure what else it could have been, the only difference for this setup was the difference of java being installed. I did this on two systems. Both Dell’s, both have 1GB Ram and 80GB Drives. Just basic desktop’s.
Please follow these steps to remove older version of Java components and upgrade the application. Beware it is NOT supported for use in 9x or ME and probably will not install in those systems
Upgrading Java:
· Download the latest version of Java SE Runtime Environment (JRE)JRE 6 Update 21. http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/java/javase/downloads/index.html
· Click the “Download” button to the right.
· Select your Platform and check the box that says: “I agree to the Java SE Runtime Environment 6 License Agreement.”.
· Click on Continue.
· Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation (jre-6u21-windows-i586-p.exe) and save it to your desktop. Do NOT use the Sun Download Manager…
· Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
· Go to Start > Control Panel, double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
· Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
· Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
· Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java version.
· Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
· Then from your desktop double-click on the download to install the newest version.(Vista users, right click on the jre-6u21-windows-i586-p.exe and select “Run as an Administrator.”)
After this, check to see if you software is up to date with Secunia Software Inspector http://secunia.com/vulnerability_scanning/personal/ - direct vendor download is available if needed. Many of us use this weekly since software changes often.
You really should enable MS Updates for maximum protection or at least notify you of updates.
You should have a solid firewall. If you have XP, you need a third-party firewall. If you have Vista or Win7, you can use Windows FW as long as you enable 2-way protection.
There is a huge security hole with Adobe Reader now and many are uninstalling it. Besides it is a hog on your system. There are other pdf readers that use less resources, like Nitro pdf, or Fox-It (just don’t install the tool bars and do a Custom Install), and others.
