I recently bought a new pc, I installed Avast 5 on it but every time I start my pc I get the following message: Error: could not detect language dll [1033\UILangRes.dll]
I use the Dutch version of Avast, which I selected while installing.
I looked it up on a forum and discovered that uninstalling might solve the problem, but it won’t uninstall either… I cannot remove the files nor start Avast from the menu Start.
So, I’m stuck, anyone who can help me uninstall or tell me how to fix the error?

I recently bought a new pc
OBS: and you must uninstall any previous used or preinstalled AV before installing avast
it is also recomended to clean out any leftovers with a removal tool
Just download anew the same stable version you previously downloaded, but only from the official website of avast.
Maybe it would be better to download the English original version, and install that. Then reboot, select the new language in the avast main GUI, save and reboot again.
This is probable going to solve it, and a full uninstall is probable not necessary.
Pondus, I recently dl the newest Avast, so probably is 6.
I tried the uninstall links, both, but since i cannot open Avast (because of the error) I cannot disable its self defence…
On the other hand, I did remove all other AV before installing Avast.
The reason I suggest installing first the English version and then (after reboot), select the alternative language is:
1_ that’s the dll language requested in the error message;
2_ some dialog (or whatever other part of avast) may lack of the appropriate translation (specially newish sections / additions), so the default is to use the English text.
After installing the English version (downloaded anew from the official site), reboot, and go to avast main GUI → settings → language → select the language you want → install → save settings → reboot → test and report back.
So I did, After rebooting my pc (because I had tried, but failed to remove avast, I had to reboot) I got a message in French(??) that my product key had expired. I ignored it since I was going to reinstall.
(Now that I had Avast opened, I could deactivate the auto-protect, but didn’t)
I reinstalled the English version, withou any problem.
I rebooted and got the notification again, in French.
When I opened Avast it was partially in French, partially in English.
I installed the Dutch package and rebooted.
After rebooting i could not select another language in Avast.
I reinstalled the Dutch package and then I could select it as A language, no reboot.
I renewed my key right after.
You refer to cleaning out leftovers with a removal tool?
Any advice in a tool that would get the job done? (I’m kinda carefull downloading stuff onto my pc, so I’d like to have one I can trust)
After removing avast with that tool ,check for any left overs of Avast in Program files,Application data (program data) and also for other security softwares (if you had).
I think you are mixing things/posts here. One thing is removing avast’s leftovers following the instructions from http://www.avast.com/uninstall-utility.
What Pondus also posted, in REPLY#1, was that you probably have/had some other pre-installed antivirus. You should uninstall that antivirus, and whether you actually got to use it ever, or disabled it immediately, you should anyway run the respective removal utility for that other antivirus, the one pre-installed in your system (like, for example, Norton Symantec, or any other).
For that other antivirus, that most probably left you with remnants, you should review if you already uninstalled it from “Add/Remove Programs”, then reboot, and then read the appropriate instruction in the respective “info” link (according to that other antivirus), located at http://singularlabs.com/uninstallers/security-software/. With the respective info, run the respective removal utility for that other pre-installed antivirus.
Then, when your system is really free from conflicts, install avast anew (clean latest stable install, with no previous registry keys, no “avast” folders, no “alwil” folders), reboot, report back, and if there is still another problem, then we can give you more instructions.
