Error message in system tray

There is a red circle on avast! ball icon in the system tray. When I click on it I get an error message. :'(I am running XP and have done everything stated in 'how to fix this to no avail -ideas and help please! many thanks, RonH

This is also commonly associated with having another AV or remnants of one still on your system.

Have (or did) you another AV installed in this system, if so what was it and how did you get rid of it ?

no other av system involved, so I’m still at a a loss. Thank you for replying. RonH

I take it you mean you have checked in services, to make sure its set to automatic

Some infections, like Bagle, could prevent the correct installation of avast.
Is your computer clean?

F-Bagle
The F-Bagle utility disinfects computers infected with the certain Bagle worm variants. Please see the readme.txt file for more information.

OK. I can still run virus checker which tells me my system is clean. I have made sure that it is set to automatic. The avast On-Access scanner is not running neither is the email scanner.

What about if I removed the avast programme and downloaded avast pro once again. Would that work? At the moment I have no virus protection. Many thanks RonH

I suggest an installation from the scratch:

  1. Uninstall avast from Control Panel first.
  2. Boot.
  3. Download the latest version of Avast Uninstall and use it for complete uninstallation. If, for any reason, you can’t run it, try booting in Safe Mode and doing it from there.
  4. Boot.
  5. Download, save and install the latest avast! version. It will be good to accept the boot time scanning on next boot.
  6. Boot.
  7. Check and post the results.

Hi Tech. Many thanks, your suggestions worked!! but still need a bit of help. the av pro I removed still had 9 months to run. The new av pro expires in seven days (it’s only a trial) is there any way I can carry on the rest of the previous subscription?

Sure.
Didn’t you keep that information (email)?
If not, write an email to sales (at) avast (dot) com and explain what happened.
