Error Messsage on Avast free

Hi to all I’m new to forums and old so please be gentle and patient with me!

I have a a problem with avast on my new desktop running windows 7 64bit with a mirror raid.

When I try to update the product manually I get error message " the parameter is incorrect" message. Also in the task bar ( right hand side of screen ) the message Avast anti virus Attention your system is not fully protected.
I have tried to install the latest version of the product 5.0.396 but again I get error message. can you please advise on solution .

No one got any help for this ???.. Please its driving me mad!

:frowning:

Hi Sid_snake,

I am guessing that because avast! 5 is so new no one has a definite answer for you, hence no replys (or that it simply got lost in with all the other postings, which unfortunately does happen…)

Even so, I am guessing here, but have a few possible things:

-What was the previous AV, How was it removed.
Remnants could have messed with the install of avast! 5…

-Can you try a repair? (Don’t really know if this will help, but…)

Start -->control panel -->Programs -->uninstall a program -->avast! Antivirus -->Click 'Uninstall/Change -->Scroll down and click repair

-How did you re-install?

Did you use aswClear5.exe?

Maybe you could try using it when you re-install.

Open the avast UI, and expand the details so you can see what exactly it is that isn’t fully protected ?

Have you disabled any of the avast shields as that would result in that notification, see images, note they will differ from your UI, it is just how to check that they are for .

Ok have looked at what you told me to and there does NOT appear to be anything NOT protected.
the only thing is the programme update not correct version so when I try to update I get error message as shown.

Here is the error message

This has got me stumped!
Any suggestions would be MOST welcome.
TIA.

Fortunately it hasn’t got me stumped, you aren’t using the latest version of the program and that is what it is telling you to update (the button to the right).

You are trying to update the virus database and engine and really you should update the program, as there may have been changes in database and engine updates that the old program doesn’t support.

So I would suggest a Program update, which should also include database and engine updates.
If it was in trying the program update that this error occurred then it may require a clean reinstall of the latest program version ?

Thanks for the information . FYI I got the same error message when I tried to update the engine or the VDbase.
I have however downloaded the latest version from avast and reinstalled the program It now seems to be working OK, but I still get one icon ion the tray saying “Avast antivirus Attention. Your system is not fully protected”. I have checked through all I can and everything seems to working OK.
many thanks for your patience and help over the past couple of days.
I did also ask on the tech help with Avast and sent them some log files but they still have yet to reply to me which is why I posted on here hoping someone might have the answer.

regards

Probably best and quickest to do a clean reinstall:
Download the latest version of avast http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html and save it to your HDD, somewhere you can find it again. Use that when you reinstall.

Download the avast! Uninstall Utility, find it here ensure you get the version5 one, aswClear5.exe and save it to your HDD.

    1. Now uninstall (using add remove programs, if you can’t do that start from the next step), reboot.- 2. run the avast! Uninstall Utility from safe mode, once complete reboot into normal mode[/i].[li]3. install the latest version, reboot.
