I use the Free avast! home version 4.7. For the 1st time, several days ago, I had the following problem w/an update. The message was "Last encountered error: Cannot connect to download50.avast.com. Any suggestions?
What is your firewall ?
Does it alow avast.setup internet access ?
NVIDIA Firewall - and w/regards to the 2nd question, how do I know if it allows it? I do know that I’ve been able to connect to the internet w/no problems for prior updates.
If you disable the firewall, will avast update?
If the nvidia firewall is a motherboard option for a firewall then I believe it doesn’t provide outbound protection.
Strange things happen, many firewalls forget or somehow corrupt the application permissions and result in what was previously allowed to be blocked. I know nothing about the nvidia firewall so you would have to consult your motherboard documentation.
If it is an MB hardware firewall without outbound protection then I would suggest you look at a third party firewall.
How do you connect to the internet dial-up, broadband, etc. ?
When does the error occur, e.g. what were you doing, just after boot, etc. ?
Have you tried a manual update ?
I turned firewall off immediately after re-booting my system. A few minutes after, the red box popped up again and this time the error message was the same but now it says I can’t connect to download35.avast.com. I don’t know what’s up. How can I just get these manually, if need be?
Right click the avast icon, Updating, iAVS Update.
There are lots of different update servers to spread the load so the number is likely to change.
You can also download the complete VPS file rather than the increments - avast! VPS Update - Manual Download

Are you sure your hosts file is not blocking the access to avast site?

Do you use PeerGuardian or any other IP filter?

Have you tried to delete the temporary Internet files? To do this go to Internet explorer >Tools > Internet options > Delete files > Click delete all offline content (just to be sure) > click ok.It might take some time to delete them. Try to update again…
Hi, i have the same problem but only the program update doesnt work the virus database update is fine, i have nvidia firewall and winXP pro. i remember that once i stopped the program update because the electricity cut during a storm and since then i cant update i tried to reinstall it but it still the same. is there a manual update for the program?
Can you try to repair your installation?
Go to Control Panel > Add/Remove programs > avast! antivirus > Remove. Then choose Repair function in the popup window (Repair). You must be connected to the internet while repairing.
If this does not help, can you uninstall / boot / install / boot again?
hmm ok it was just my firewall blocking the updates i turned it off and updates went fine.
Well, firewall is always playing tricks with us ;D
