Errors from Avast when updating

I have Broadband with a dial-up modem and have my settings ticked for “I only connect to the Internet using dial-up modem” yet quite often my log is full of errors about not being able to update. with error numbers “Return code is 0x20000004 dwRes is 20000004” on application 1572 has anybody any idea why this happens please.

When I am online it works OK

If you search the board for 0x20000004 keyword, won’t you find the answer for this? ::slight_smile:

I have tried direct connection from Proxy server after searching for the error number. That isn’t really the problem though. I do get regular updates and am notified by blue pop-up to say so when I am on line.

It is when I am not connected to the Internet that it tries to update, I get the red pop-up saying error.

If I have ticked the box to say I only have dial-up modem I expect it to only try and update when I do go on line. That is the question I wanted answered.

Yes… it should work like this…
But do you have any other connection that could be activated? I mean, other non-dial-up one? Is it active or not?
avast checks if there is an available connection each 40 seconds. If there isn’t, wait more 40 seconds to check. Checking does not take more than one second and, of course, does not use the Internet band. If there is a connection, check for an update. If there is not any new file to download, wait 4 hours to start checking again. If there is an available update, start it and install it. Again, wait 4 hours to check the next time.

That is the way it works, as a dial-up user I can confirm this, avast doesn’t establish a connection, it checks if a connection exists and if it does it will check for updates.

When this happens, have you just been on the internet for a very short time, e.g. to check for email and disconnected ?
If so avast will detect that connection and start to check the update servers for updates. If you disconnect whilst this is happening avast will cycle through the list of servers in the servers.def file (80) trying each in turn but because there is no connection this will fail, it will take several minutes to cycle through them before finally giving up and displaying the error.

I have seen this before on my system and replicated it, the Setup and Update, Setup info section of the avast log viewer (right click the avast icon) listed the 80 attempts to connect to the download servers.

Hi David I think that must be the answer. Going on the Internet for a short period of time, and not giving it enough time to check for updates. It works well enough if I am on for some time and it may update two or three times a day. So I think I will have to ignore the errors, because I notice my current version of database is always up to date. Thank you

For some reason this can happen as avast when it recognises a connection is present will start the checking process, why having started checking it can’t just stop immediately the connection is dropped or closed and display the error immediately, I don’t know. That way the user would associate it with his having closed or lost the connection, rather than to continue cycling through the servers until the end.

Whilst it is rare that I go on-line for such a short time and don’t see this it is worth trying to pause this checking when you immediately connect. However, you don’t simply have to ignore the errors, there is a known means of delaying this for broadband connections, but also one which I’m trying to see if it is the equivalent for dial-up users.

Use a text editor and edit the avast4.ini file, the default installation location is C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\DATA\avast4.ini (I would advise you copy avast4.ini before editing it, just in case).

Add the line RASWaitSeconds=120 to the [InetWD] section, the 120 is seconds so if you aren’t on-line for more than two minutes it won’t check, you can increase the delay if you want, save and exit.

[InetWD] UseRAS=1 RASWaitSeconds=120

You may see more I have only shown the first two lines in mine, you can place thenew line anywhere in the section, but after the UseRAS=1 is fine.

Thank you David have copied that information and will alter the 4.ini file, and try different lengths of times. It may look better in my log files not to see the errors. I have noticed it is when checking my emails that this happens, if I haven’t got anything else to do at the time.

Personally I don’t look in the log files as a matter of routine, too scary as the content is more useful to the programmers for debugging than a user.

When I look in control panel and look at the event viewer/Antivirus and see error warnings, I try to eliminate them one at a time so they do not occur again. This is just another one that I have managed to eliminate. I like to know exactly what is going on in my computer, and it helps to learn about as many aspects as possible. The more I learn the more I can fix my own problems. It also gives me something to do. Thank you once again for your help David and Tech.

  1. When your computer boots up does it

(i) also boot up your dialup too. ie do you see the Dialup icon on your Taskbar next to your clock
see: http://home.napanet.net/Page/FAQ/DialUpW2K/win10.gif

Or

(ii) do you have to manually click on your dialup icon to initiate internet conection

If your answer is (ii) Go onto the rest

  1. Does the Red Flag behaviour also occur, if you dont immediately connect to the internet nor initiate your Dialup connection after you bootup.
ie you stayoff line for 5/10 mins before you connect.
Or does it only occur if you connect briefly then disconnect as stated by DavidR

  2. If your dialup is not initiated!!
Can other internet programs initiate your Dialup connection automatically if you double click on them
eg Internet explorer, Bit torrent Clients, News Readers, etc.

or would they fail ie not be able to connect

  1. What Operating System are you using

would you look here to see if your prob is similar to mine
also highlight any differences between your prob and mine

Hello Sebon, in answer to your questions. No my computer does not boot my dial-up connection. The only time it will dial my connection, because I have it in I/E to “Always dial my default connection” This will only happen if I want to go onto the Internet and click the I/E icon on my desktop.

Also my Internet Explorer doesn’t get altered to “never dial a connection”. I think a good Registry Editor defragging regularly, and cleaning my computer from temp files on-line and offline, helps to keep a healthy and good working computer, without any serious problems in 5 years.

I also use a password manager and can get it to dial from there to visit places like this. This is all done with permissions in my Firewall for known safe sites. Sunbelt Firewall will not allow connections of any program that I haven’t given it permission to connect with.

I have read in your posting that some people have “never dial a connection”, that is also OK if you don’t want to use a safe known URL in your emails and dial from Outlook Express. I also have Avast box ticked in settings to " I only connect to Internet using a dial-up modem".

The problem is now cured because I altered the Avast4.ini file to delay check for 240 seconds as per Davids post above.
