Every Scan Freezes My Computer

I’ve been using Avast for the past several years. For the past year, whenever Avast runs an automated scan, my computer Freezes.

I am using avast pro on Windows 7. I have my avast set to scan my computer every Wednesday night at 3am, but over the past year I have grown to dread this time of the week. As soon as the scan starts, my computer gets a bit slower … and continues to get slower and slower till the morning when my computer is pretty much frozen and I am forced to hard reboot.

Computer Specs:
Processor Intel(R) Core™ i7-2600 CPU @ 3.40GHz
Video Card NVIDIA GeForce GTX 550 Ti
RAM 16 GB
Operating System Microsoft Windows 7 Ultimate Edition Service Pack 1 (build 7601), 64-bit

I do not get the same problem if I do a boot scan. Please advise.

Check the scan log to see if you can find something in it that is possibly related to the problem.
It can be a file is causing the problem.

How do I view the scan logs?

In their default state, I don’t believe you will find anything of use in the logs.

First you have to have checked the Generate report file in the Scan for viruses - Scan Settings - Report file. Even then the data by default only has Infected items and Hard errors enabled.

  • Avast! scan Report File Locations
  • C:\ProgramData\Avast Software\Avast\report (windows Vista, windows 7 and later).
