Everything's "Not Responding"

Hello Everyone!

I really do hope you can help me with this.

For the past few weeks I’ve been reformatting my computer constantly because something was causing my laptop to lock up.

This is what happens: As soon as I boot into the desktop, I do whatever (Go to event viewer, surf the web, open up files) when out of nowhere, the window I’m using says “Not Responding”. Ok this is weird, so then I will try to close it but it won’t close. Ok try to open Task Manager. Nope that doesn’t work. How about opening something else like another window. Nope that doesn’t work. Everything, even Explorer itself locks up and says not responding.

A few times, I just let it sit and it will take a long while, but it will eventually fix itself. And that’s if I’m really lucky. Other times, it’ll lock up for good and all I can do is Hard Reset my laptop. Other times, it will “unlock” and will do whatever clicks and button presses I made during the lock up… but then it’ll go back to “not responding”.

I’ve been really annoyed at this and kept reformatting my computer, thinking I downloaded malware or it was because my os shared space with another os on the same drive. But once I installed everything I usually have on the Clean OS with no petitions on my harddrive, this problem persists.

A few hours ago, I did another clean install. This time only installed a few programs (Opera, Tune-Up Utilities 2012, all the Windows Updates and Avast) and, unfortunately, the problem has something to do with Avast. I know this because I’ve uninstalled it, played around with my computer and nothing locked up. Installed it again, and it locks up pretty early. I’m actually typing this up in Safe mode… It’s that bad.

My Laptop Specs are:

ASUS G51J-A1
Windows 7 64bit
Intel Core i7 720QM
8GB DDR3 RAM at 1300
Nvidia GTX 260M
2 Seagate Momentus 7200RPM - 320GB Each

If you need more information, please tell me.

I have the Avast! 7 Internet Security Paid Version and I really hate to not use what I bought.

Please HELP!

Thanks!

Interesting… well ill definitely try it out and ill report back in 7 - 8 hours. I gotta sleep after all! Thanks! Hope this works!

  1. OK.
  2. You’re welcome.

I don’t believe I did anything wrong, but I’ll try again.

What happened was I went into a normal boot. And disabled the Self Defense module. Soon after I downloaded the 64bit files, my comp froze up. The usual not responding. So I inserted the files into those 2 folders in safemode. Went back into normal boot up but now I get stuck at the Welcome screen where all I see is the Word “Welcome” with a loading circle beside it. I know it got stuck because I left it on since 3AM and now it’s 10AM…

I’ll uninstall, remove all of avast’s files and try again. I’ll report back soon…

Nope… I had to insert the files in safe mode because I don’t have much time to do it in normal boot. When I uninstalled Avast! Internet Security, everything was fine. Right after I installed Avast again, when it gave the option to restart now or later, my laptop froze.

Please, can you further assist me or can any one give me ideas as to what’s happening? Should I do a custom install and don’t install the shields or other parts of Avast?

Please Avast, help me out. I bought this and I want to use it. I don’t want my 2 years with you wasted because I can’t use your product!

  • Other security related software installed…??
  • Which AV did you use before avast!..??

Hello Asyn and everyone else,

Sorry for the definite late reply.

I have not installed anything else other than the given MSE and Windows Firewall from all the Windows updates. I also have Tune-Up Utilities 2012 but it’s not really security related.

I used Mcafee before. But that was over 2 years ago.

Honestly, no offense, but I’m not sure how these questions help out. If I’m mistaken, please correct me but I mentioned above that I did do a clean install several times with only Avast Internet Security doing all the security stuff.

Also, and I wish I mentioned this earlier, I had Avast Internet Security working flawlessly before. Sometimes, it would freeze a new game I started up because I had to accept exceptions but other than that, it worked like how it should. But once I reformatted my computer due to extremely slow load ups, this whole mess came up and it is the reason why I’m posting.

Everything worked before. I just don’t understand why it doesn’t work anymore on a clean install.

Thanks,

You have to drop MSE…!!!

Did you uninstall McAfee with the link given here?: http://singularlabs.com/uninstallers/security-software/

Running 2 antiviruses is highly unrecommended as it will cause unexpected results.

That’s interesting… MSE worked before with avast. I can try it and see what happens I suppose. You are right it is another antivirus thing-a-ma-bob.

Wouldn’t a clean wipe get rid of it anyways?

Ok!

So I took Asyn’s advice and everything seems to be fine! I’ll give it one day to see what happens and I’ll report any changes in anything (Boot time, program lags and whatnot).

Here goes nothing!

Thanks again Asyn for helping me realize what I was overlooking lol!

You’re welcome.
