i just downloaded ewido to add extra security with my avast professional and i don’t want it to start up with i reboot windows…i went to start…run…msconfig…startup …and i don’t see any program to uncheck…that i see …also do i need the real time protection on since i have avast pro, retail version of spy sweeper and ad-aware se plus also running in the background???thanks
I can’t remember if mine was ever in the startup entries or not but after the 14 trial the resident elements are supposed to revert to the free version, so there may not be any startup entry. There is however a service, Ewido Security Suite Control (C:\Program Files\ewido\security suite\ewidoctrl.exe) started on boot and that is even when there is no resident on-access scanning by Ewido.
I have that service stopped and set to Manual not Automatic and I use a batch file to start it before I check for updates and do any ewido scans. You can also start the service using Start, Run and type Net Start “ewido security suite control” with the quotes and click OK, that will start the service.
Check the windows Task manager for running processes which may be attributable to ewido.
I installed Ewido Security Suite , but did not enable the “guard” or Auto-Update features, can’t remember if there was an option to " not run at startup " .
I didn’t want the guard conflicting with Avast! Resident , or the resource drain (or nuisance ) of Auto-Update feature.
The trial has just ended , so it’s still set up the same and functioning just the same.
As far as it starting up I removed it with WinPatrol , or SpyBot s&d ( or a setup option ? )
Don’t like msconfig as you seem to get stuck in a loop , of having your computer start in diagnostic mode.
I notice it’s listed in Services as DavidR mentioned ; START/RUN/ Type in : services.msc. where you can maybe disable it from startup also. ( change from Automatic to Manual ) I note checking just then and " ewido security suite control " is disabled on my machine. (?)
Also DavidR , thanks for that info ,
...You can also start the service using Start, Run and type Net Start "ewido security suite control" with the quotes and click OK, that will start the service...If I want to update, or run a scan I just use it's icon. ?
I found that when downloading the ewido updates if I didn’t have the control service running it kept giving a warning that the control wasn’t running so for some reason it is checking for its presence. I too use the icon to start the ewido GUI, but that alone doesn’t start the service.
I’ve disabled the ewido service and can, manually, download and run the updates.
I’ll try a full remove of the shell hook that ewido starts at boot time… maybe just to have the context menu entry…
Well, my experience with Ewido has been a little different. When first installed, I think Guard was running at start-up but it was never a problem with Avast. Once the trial period of Guard was over, Ewido never has run on start-up but only when I activate it (according to “What’s Running”). I have had no problems getting updates (manually) nor running the program. Like Abraxas, I do not remember if there was an option to not run on start-up.
Although, now that I have just checked, Task Manager says that ewidoctrl.exe is running. I will not worry about it, though, as it is using no cpu cycles and only 1892k memory.
Well, if nothing else, in Services, you could set it from automatic to manual as David suggests. That is how I have it set.
Hi all :
There is an Ewido "tutorial" at :
www.greyknight17.com/spy/Tutorials/ewidoQuickGuide.pdf
Castlecops.com has added an "Ewido" Support forum .
Also keep in mind that for the last few months (maybe longer), there are now official support forums for ewido at Wilders Security.
Thanks for that Spiritsongs, I’m sure that will come in handy.
Mike, thanks for the info on and link to Wilders Security ewido support forums.
After installing of Ewido on w2ksp4, my sunbelt-kerio PF 4.2.3 started frequently crashing by BSOD of fwdrv.sys. It disapeared after deinstalling ewido…
Hi Poutnik :
Before uninstalling Ewido, did you contact Sunbelt Software
and/or view their "Sunbelt Kerio Personal Firewall User's
Guide" at http://www.sunbelt-software.com/Kerio-Docs.cfm
I am sure Ewido and that firewall are compatible IF
configured correctly !?
Also, you should consider the Ewido Support forums at
either Wilderssecurity and/or Castlecops !?
Before uninstalling I could hardly contact anybody :(, BSOD would be faster…
I use KPF the whole its existence, even when it was Tiny.
I will inspect forums, my reply does not mean I think it is a bad product.
Maybe just do not like my PC…
i just installed ewido and all i did to turn off guard permanently was open the program, went to status, at the bottom there should be a thing marked uninstall guard, i did that restarted and that was it, it never ran again.
Hi Poutnik :
Just came across the "official" Sunbelt Kerio Firewall
Support forums at :
http://www.castlecops.com/f208-Sunbelt_Kerio.html .
I run the same setup & no problems, might try a registy editor like regsupreme before reinstalling Ewido but it may have to do with the way you have Kerio configured, I’ve turened off ad blocking etc.
As mentioned above, there is an “official” Sunbelt Kerio forum at CastleCops. The Kerio BSOD problem has been an issue for some time… long before Sunbelt purchased the firewall. There’s a topic devoted to just the BSOD issue in that forum…
