Exclusions, but Blue Ball Still Spins

I wish to exclude all files on my hard drive with the .docx extension. I have done this:

Standard Shield|Advanced|Add|*.docx|OK

and

Program Settings|Exclusions|Add|*.docx|OK

However, after doing these exclusions, when I open a .docx file, I see the blue ball spinning. Is Avast! still scanning these .docx documents; if not why is the blue ball spinning after I have tried to exclude such files? Thanks.

Open the avast On-Access Scanner screen and check the Last Scanned files and see if it has scanned a .docx file, or enable the, ‘Show detailed info on performed actions’ option to show what is being scanned.

My guess is that it’s simply scanning the program itself (Word with its DLLs) that is being started.

I probably should have said what I am trying to accomplish – some of my document files are slow to open and I thought it might help things if the virus scanner did not bother with these particular files. If Avast! is scanning and rescanning the program and its dll’s, etc. time after time, is that really necessary? Having said that, I guess if I were to get, say, a .docx Word document attached to an email I would want to have it scanned, wouldn’t I…

I guess there is no easy way to tell Avast! to not scan .docx files I create but do scan .docx files that come in an email…? Just trying to speed up my work with files I am creating. Thanks.
