Hey all, I’ve been using shareaza p2p (bad i know) to download music n vids etc with no problems. However, whenever i download a program file with a .exe extension, avast jumps in at last minute while file is being verified and tells me it either has a win32 vb:ie wrm or a Trojano-G or a trojan horse. Is this just avast being overly sensitive? I have moved these files to the chest and haven’t touched since, should i extract them run some anti spy/mal programs or what? :-\
You can try to send these files e.g. to VirusTotal to see what other antiviruses think about it. But I’d say it’s quite likely that a lot of files downloaded from P2P are actually (malicious) fakes.
I thought as much… But do i have to extract them from the chest 1st? If yes, and it is a virus, will it have been activated by taking it out? And should i close all programs before doing so? Also i read somewhere here about having to turn off resident scanners to send viruses for testing, does this apply for an online scan?
Sorry, i’m not too good at this puter stuff… :-[
Also should i turn off resident scanner when using adaware, spybot and ewido(avg)? ???
Yes.
No, unless you activate (start) it. The mere extracting won’t do anything bad.
No, it doesn’t really matter.
I’m not sure, actually. If you try to submit the file to VirusTotal (with the resident protection enabled) and get a virus warning from avast!, or if VirusTotal reports that you uploaded an empty file (0 bytes), then yes.
Yes, it is better to pause/stop Standard Shield temporarily.
;D Thank you soooo much! Ever so helpful! ;D
??? One more thing… Where do i extract the file to?
Doesn’t matter - anywhere. I guess you only want to upload the file to the online scanner… and possibly delete it afterwards.
;DThanks again. ;D
