The smart people however will resist the upgrade. :)

I too always change the auto update checker, for different reasons though I like to retain control of what is going on on my system. One exception I allowed auto update checks is avast as that can’t establish a connection.
Allowing a check for updates when it’s under your control doesn’t relinquish your rights.
For those on dial up like you are David, this may be a pain.
For those on DSL and/or Cable etc this option is a convenience and affords you the opportunity
to keep your programs up-to-date.
For most items, I don’t allow auto updates. I usually check the option to be notified when a new version is available.
