Failure to update

Old computer (Compaq Presario SR1055CL), Win XP Home SP3, Windows firewall, WinPatrol, SpywareBlaster, MVPS hosts file, Avast! Internet Security 8.0.151. Slow (48K on a good day) dialup connection. 2 or 3 days ago I got a notice that an Avast! update had failed - that happens for instance when DropBox is hogging the connection with a multimegabyte upload. So I did a manual update. The upper part of the panel showed “Program is current: 8.0.151”. Down below under “Update program” it showed update 9.0.151 available. So after the engine/definitions update was complete I tried to update the program. About halfway through (judging by the progress bar) it got stuck downloading file ais_snx2-7cf-e.vpx - as soon as the download was completed (a BIG file apparently) it started again, endlessly, for hours, until I shut the computer down. Since then I get a popup that I should update the program to 9.0.151, but when I try to do so, either from the popup or from the user interface, it gets stuck on “Initializing, please wait” and nothing more happens - for up to 12 hours or more.

Looking at the release history I don’t see 9.0.151 anywhere, but do see several 2014.9.0.xxxx releases.

What to do?

Thanks,

What to do?
download the install file and install manually

download install file. http://www.avast.com/download-software

remove old with this, rebootnd install new http://www.avast.com/uninstall-utility

It wants me to set a duration for a free trial - but I already have a paid-up version?

Thanks,

insert license file…

That worked, thanks very much!

It did take two tries - the first install got stuck at “Starting kernel driver: aswKbd” but after reboot the second try ran to completion and 2014.9.0.2008 seems to be working fine.

A different question - I have a new office laptop (Dell Inspiron 15, core i3 etc.) that came with McAfee Live Safe installed. That has now expired (after only two weeks or so) and I would rather like to replace it with Avast! Internet Security. Presumably that means downloading the McAfee removal tool and going through the usual procedure to remove all traces of previous AV software before loading the new one. Question arising, since the laptop is now unprotected (and our office is wireless broadband) would it be safer to download the relevant files here and carry them to the office on a flash drive, so the laptop would not have to be online unprotected during the switchover? I can disable the wireless connection on the laptop - or even unplug the router when nobody else is in the office. The laptop is running Windows 8 (but not yet 8.1). It belongs to our water district (of which I am GM) and not to me personally. I own a better one (4th gen core i7, etc.) myself for which the same question will arise. Do I presume correctly there will be a different kind of license for our water district (a public agency, not a private corporation)?

Thanks,

would it be safer to download the relevant files here and carry them to the office on a flash drive,
you may do that.....

free version is only for private use .....

Even though the office laptop is running Windows 8 while my home desktop is still running XP?

Thanks, very useful. Actually I have done this sort of thing several times for other people, who often ask me for help with their computers, so I'm somewhat familiar with the drill. Many new computers come with McAfee or Norton pre-installed or as trial versions, and there are IMHO valid reasons for changing that ...

Yes, I know. I have a paid version of AIS on my home desktop and intend to install a paid version of AIS on the office laptop. That will of course be entirely separate from anything involving my own personal computers. I do also want to install the paid version of AIS on my personal laptop - that will be in addition to my antique home desktop. Does that require a separate license, to run AIS on a separate machine?

What I was really asking was, is there anything different about setting up paid AIS on the office machine, because it is a “commercial” use (actually, it’s local government, but I suppose that’s the same)?

Thanks again,

Even though the office laptop is running Windows 8 while my home desktop is still running XP?
should not be a problem...

No.... you buy a License and install ;)

there are also avast for server and Endpoint Versions http://www.avast.com/en-eu/business

I am running Windows 7 Home Premium on a Toshiba Satellite L-505D-S5983, AMD Athlon Dual-Core M300 with 3GB DDR2 RAM. I have never had a problem with my AVAST until the update 9.01501 wouldn’t install. The safe zone was not operating properly and Flash Player was being shut down along with any web site I tried to log onto. It would not uninstall easily. I had to use system restore and then reinstall my original program. Each time I tried to install the update it did the same things. It never did completely install so now I ignore it. My subscription expires in 2/14 and I don’t think I will renew it. I don’t like the idea of leaving but this is causing to many problems.
