I ran a scan recently and in my E:\ drive I cam across this DIAG.exe and I got a Virus warning from avast!. E:\DIAG.EXE Win32:Trojan-gen {Other} is the warning I received. Now, my E:\ drive is a DVD-R drive and the media it detected it on is a non-writable disc that I purchased from Best Buy a few months ago and is Civilization 4. This is the first time I have encountered this. I have played the game while running avast and not had any problems. My other avast! scans have turned up negative (that is clean), as well as SUPERAntiSpyware scans and Spybot - Search and Destroy. I also can take no action on the file (that is move to chest or delete it. I assume this is because it is located on a disc that cannot be altered. It does not appear to have infected the computer in any other way.
To know if a file is a false positive, please submit it to VirusTotal and let us know the result. VirusTotal has a file size limit of 10Mb.
If it is indeed a false positive, send it in a password protected zip to virus@avast.com. Please, mention in the body of the message why you think it is a false positive and the password used. Thanks.
As a workaround, you can add these files to the Standard Shield provider (on-access scanning) exclusion list.
Left click the ‘a’ blue icon, click on the provider icon at left and then Customize. Go to Advanced tab and click on Add button…
You can use wildcards like * and ?. But be careful, you should ‘exclude’ that many files that let your system in danger.
