I’ve had PrivBar installed as an addon in IE7 for a while now, but this morning Avast highlighted it as Adware.
I got it via here I think:
http://blogs.msdn.com/aaron_margosis/archive/2004/07/24/195350.aspx
Apparently other virus scanners such as F-Secure and AVG also originally picked it up as adware.
Could someone check to see if it’s clean or whether it really is adware?
thanks

To know if it’s a false positive, Upload the file to VirusTotal and post the results.

I have the same problem. used it for some time without any problems on Win XP Pro SP2.
This false positive only stared with database Ver 080729-1.
I have uploaded privbar.dll to Total Virus and got the results here:
http://www.virustotal.com/analisis/da06f30cc85411eef0a38354d77631b8
Only Avast and Gdata have reported this as a Win32:Adware-gen.
Hope Avast can remove this as false positive.

If it is indeed a false positive, see http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=34950.msg293451#msg293451 , how to report it to avast! and what to do to exclude them until the problem is corrected.

Thank you Avast!
Followed the procedure above.
This is now fixed. The virus database that does not show privbar.dll as a false positive is V080731-0.
