False Positive

Hello

The last two times I have run Avast (I run it once a week) it has picked up two files as dangerous. They are the .exe and uninstall files for Digiguide, which is a TV listing software I have run for years. Why has it decided they are dodgy when they clearly are not and how do I tell it to stop complaining about them. I searched for Digiguide but found nothing. As is probably obvious I am not very technical and could not find a way to exclude them in the Avast user interface or tools section. Can anyone help?

Cheers Margaret

what malware name did avast give when detecting?

suspicious file(s) can be tested at one of these places www.virustotal.com / www.metascan-online.com
if tested before, always click rescan for a fresh result

you can report issues to avast lab here https://support.avast.com/ > avast virus lab

you can also report and send files from avast chest
Avast 2015: Using the Virus Chest https://www.avast.com/en-eu/faq.php?article=AVKB21#artTitle

and next time, use viruses and worms forum section for reporting virus and false positive problems

Hello Pondus

Thank you for your reply.

I am sorry I posted in the wrong place but I had problems trying to send the message anywhere. :-\

The error message is THREAT:Win32Malware-gen

This appears for both the exe file and the uninstall file. As I said these files have been on my computer for years so why have they been picked up now. Also why is it not complaining about the installed program if it does not like it’s exe and uninstall things.

Also is there a way to find this post again easily. It has taken me ages to find it and I could not find anything useful in the help file. The only other forum I ever used had a ‘my posts’ option. Is there one of these and I just can’t find it.

Should I try and send these to Avast as problem files?

Sorry I am so wooden at this but I find forums very difficult to use. There never seems to be an idiot’s user guide. I say this as an idiot needing guidance. :-[

when logged in ... click the profile button at forum top Profile > summary > on left side should be a show posts button ..... list of all your posts
Should I try and send these to Avast as problem files?
yes, send as Possible False positives

Hello Pondus

Thank you for your tip on finding my posts. I assume it is supposed to be intuitive which basically means I can’t work it. :-[
I have sent the exe file to Avast and have a ticket number.

I also got an e-mail about the message thank you again.

I hope the Avast folks can remove it from their dodgy list.

Cheers Margaret

Hello Pondus

Just to let you know I had an e-mail from Lukáš at Avast who said it was a false positive and would be corrected in the next VPS, whatever that is. Thank you for encouraging me to send it in. It has given me a little more confidence.

Cheers Margaret

that is the virus signature update
