Fan on Laptop Computer Frequently Sounding

I have a new Acer laptop computer.

I haven’t done anything to it except install standard programs and programs like Avast.

Yet I hear the fan or whatever constantly making a sound every few minutes.

Is this normal for a laptop? Or is the computer being worked too hard.

I hardly use the computer for anything. I was wondering if it was Avast that was taxing the computer?

How can I find out why this Acer laptop constantly makes a sound?

Some fans are more noisy than others and can also be related to how efficient and effective the design of the system is.

Did you uninstall the AV that came with your system when purchased ? if not do so promptly and then run the correct removal tool from here http://singularlabs.com/uninstallers/security-software/

Thanks for the reply.

Yes, I did uninstall the McAfee Software that was provided with the computer.

I really have this computer on a very basic set up.

I don’t understand why the fan should be going of this much.

I use it only for Internet and that’s it.

How can I do some diagnostics to see why the fan is going off so much? The computer is new. This is ridiculous.

Is it because of Avast? Or Windows Firewall? I have hardly installed anything on this.

I don’t do any gaming or computer intensive tasks.

You can check with task manager to see what is running that doesn’t need to, use msconfig to see if there are startups that may not be neccessary to run automatically when the system starts ( itunes, messenger, media programs etc ) you can also do this with CCleaner if you have it installed.

Just a couple of obvious question - do you have the system sitting on a plain flat surface ? anything blocking the fan vents ?

Craig, I appreciate your help.

I just checked Task Manager, and I have upto 76 processes running.

I don’t even know why I have this many running when this computer is new and all I have installed is some security software, including Avast.

I uninstalled Avast, so I don’t think its the problem anymore.

How can I stop some of these processes permanently running without affecting my computer? I don’t want to stop something and have my computer not work anymore - is there anyway to safely disable something and still see if my computer will work?

Some of the biggest memory users are these svhost.exe files, dwm.exe (desktop window manager).

Please help. I don’t understand why every few minutes there is a bizarre spike in CPU usage.

How can I use Resource Monitor on Windows (resmon.exe) to find out what I can safely get rid of?

I also have a newish acer laptop. The fan runs for a high proportion of the time with windows 7 - but the cpu utilisation is actually low (mostly <10%) once initial boot and login/update are finished, and the actual cpu and hdd temps are fairly low (both as measured by sensors and by feel - can’t recall the actual numbers, I gave up worrying about it ages ago).

When I run any linux distro the fan runs less but the machine runs hotter by both sensors and feel (even with cpu frequency controlled to minimum for demand).

I think its just part of the acer hardware/bios settings interaction with w7.

If the actual temps aren’t high and cpu falls to sensible values within 10 minutes or so of initial boot-up and login, then I wouldn’t worry.

Edit
(Acer laptops do come with a lot of pre-installed crap that you don’t need - use add/remove programs or Ccleaner to get rid of any applications that you don’t want (often they’re only trial/part function versions anyway to tempt you to buy). I’d be surprised if that affects fan too much though).

One thing that did really get my cpu and fan doing overtime as I recall was western digital auto-backup software - but that wasn’t pre-installed, it came with a 2nd (external) HDD I added).

Thanks for the reply Mag

But the problem is that even after bootup and everything has loaded, the fan will sound every 1-2 minutes for about 5 seconds and then go back to silent. Then it will do it again.

The thing is, when it does this the CPU usage is not that much at times, 3-6% maybe.

I am trying to figure if this is a Acer laptop thing or something do with Windows 7 or the processes that are running.

New systems pretty much come with everthing turned on, dont go stopping any of the svhost exe’s as you may shut the system down.

A screenshoot of your startups via msconfig or ccleaner would be handy as then i could safely say what isn’t needed at boot.

If you have not run the McAfee removal tool from here http://singularlabs.com/uninstallers/security-software/ please do so, it will remove any remnants that might still be lingering on the system.

@jujubee,
Your computer is designed to maintain a certain temp. to keep it safe.
New computers run much hotter and laptops are more prone to heat because of the space constraint.
I’d be more worried if I didn’t hear a fan coming on.
I personally use a usb fan under my laptop but, that’s a user choice.
