You can check with task manager to see what is running that doesn’t need to, use msconfig to see if there are startups that may not be neccessary to run automatically when the system starts ( itunes, messenger, media programs etc ) you can also do this with CCleaner if you have it installed.
Just a couple of obvious question - do you have the system sitting on a plain flat surface ? anything blocking the fan vents ?
I just checked Task Manager, and I have upto 76 processes running.
I don’t even know why I have this many running when this computer is new and all I have installed is some security software, including Avast.
I uninstalled Avast, so I don’t think its the problem anymore.
How can I stop some of these processes permanently running without affecting my computer? I don’t want to stop something and have my computer not work anymore - is there anyway to safely disable something and still see if my computer will work?
Some of the biggest memory users are these svhost.exe files, dwm.exe (desktop window manager).
Please help. I don’t understand why every few minutes there is a bizarre spike in CPU usage.
How can I use Resource Monitor on Windows (resmon.exe) to find out what I can safely get rid of?
I also have a newish acer laptop. The fan runs for a high proportion of the time with windows 7 - but the cpu utilisation is actually low (mostly <10%) once initial boot and login/update are finished, and the actual cpu and hdd temps are fairly low (both as measured by sensors and by feel - can’t recall the actual numbers, I gave up worrying about it ages ago).
When I run any linux distro the fan runs less but the machine runs hotter by both sensors and feel (even with cpu frequency controlled to minimum for demand).
I think its just part of the acer hardware/bios settings interaction with w7.
If the actual temps aren’t high and cpu falls to sensible values within 10 minutes or so of initial boot-up and login, then I wouldn’t worry.
Edit
(Acer laptops do come with a lot of pre-installed crap that you don’t need - use add/remove programs or Ccleaner to get rid of any applications that you don’t want (often they’re only trial/part function versions anyway to tempt you to buy). I’d be surprised if that affects fan too much though).
One thing that did really get my cpu and fan doing overtime as I recall was western digital auto-backup software - but that wasn’t pre-installed, it came with a 2nd (external) HDD I added).
But the problem is that even after bootup and everything has loaded, the fan will sound every 1-2 minutes for about 5 seconds and then go back to silent. Then it will do it again.
The thing is, when it does this the CPU usage is not that much at times, 3-6% maybe.
I am trying to figure if this is a Acer laptop thing or something do with Windows 7 or the processes that are running.
@jujubee,
Your computer is designed to maintain a certain temp. to keep it safe.
New computers run much hotter and laptops are more prone to heat because of the space constraint.
I’d be more worried if I didn’t hear a fan coming on.
I personally use a usb fan under my laptop but, that’s a user choice.
