Few questions about free Avast! v 6.0.1203

Hi,
In Add/Remove Programs I show 197MB. Is that normal? I remember the size of Avast! 5 being around 138 MB.

Under Program Files\Alwil it shows Avast 5 while inside the folder it shows about all as v 6.0.1203.
Is it best to uninstall and re-install to show Avast as being v 6 under Program Files?

Could the size in Add/Remove be that huge due to parts of Avast! 5 still being there?

I removed the IM & P2P? in the Add/Remove Programs under Change.

Windows XP SP3

TIA

Logs and virus definitions could be increasing the size of installed avast.
You can do housekeeping automatically or, with brute force, manually.
The core of avast antivirus do not take that much space.

Thanks Tech for replying. Logs are aswAr1.log: 1KB - Setup.log: 204KB. So that’s not it.

How do I do housekeeping automatically or manually? I regularly trim the said logs down to 0 KB by deleting the info in those 2 logs, so don’t know if there is anything else that I can do to downsize these MB? Perhaps do a Repair?

There is also another Alwil Folder in C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Alwil Software: 10.5 MB

The questions I asked were only partially answered so I’m still waiting for them. Would a removal of Avast! and re-installing it (custom install) solve the huge MB of Avast!? TIA

You can manually disable the self defense and delete the logs and dumps in the C:\ProgramData\AVAST Software\Avast\log folder. You seem to have upgraded from previous versions. The “Alwil” folder is an old one.
You can delete files of Chest.
You can remove non-used sound schemes.
But you can’t do much more… Do you really need much space?

Thanks for responding Tech. Yes, I did (within Avast) update from v 5 to 6 so it was not a new install of v 6. Sorry I forgot to state that in my previous posts. Perhaps then a removal and fresh new install of Avast! v6 would do it?

I’ve already downloaded the uninstall tool and also the current version of Avast! on my desktop.

TIA

EDIT: I remember having to do a restore to an earlier time a few weeks ago. Could that have caused perhaps an upheaval in Avast? Noticed that the icon in the taskbar is not moving as smoothly as previously.

Yes, Windows system restore could mess, in some situations, the avast installation.
An installation from scratch or, at least, a repair are advisable.

Okay, just removed and re-installed latest Avast! from scratch, updated the virus definitions and trimmed the log sizes in settings. Deleted in addition 2 old Alwil Software Folders which were empty. Size in Add/Remove is now 142 MB. All seems to be fine now. Thanks Tech for your excellent help! I know that I can depend on Avast! help anytime unlike some others I dealt with in the dim past. All is solved.

Sorry, few last questions ATM. I have 5 shields up and running: File System - Web - Network - Script and Behavior.

Which one of these 5 is the self-defense shield? :-[

Also I have MBAM PRO. Do I need Web Shield from Avast! or other Shields in Avast! that may overlap MBAM PRO?

TIA.

None of them are, as the self-defence isn’t an antivirus shield, but a protection mechanism to prevent the termination, deletion, modification, etc. of the avast’s shields/processes/files/folders/registry entries.

MBAM’s ‘malicious website blocking’ doesn’t hold a candle to the web shield, by comparison it is a one trick pony. In fact I find it more of a pain it the rear than a help (and I have disabled it) as it is IMHO, too sensitive and blocks more than ‘malicious’ sites. It has a broad spectrum of sites that it blocks, which I wouldn’t consider malicious.

You can consider MBAM Pro as a supporting act and not the main event, it provides another level/layer of protection.

Thank you DavidR. I trust your answer and therefore have disabled in MBAM PRO the “malicious website blocking” feature and left Avast! as is to do its work in protecting this machine. However, one of the best security measures one can take is still the one sitting in front of our computers, as in safe surfing and common sense isn’t it?

Thank you again DavidR.

You’re welcome.

Whilst some would appreciate that more sensitive and broad spectrum of malicious sites/IPs blocked and that in itself shouldn’t conflict with the web or network shields. I just found it to be more hassle than help, but that’s me ;D

One other thing I would do in MBAM settings is to add the c:\windows\temp_avast_ folder to its Ignore List, this is where avast unpacks or moves files that are to be scanned, so you don’t want the duplication of scanning or possibility of conflict in that area.

Thanks for you kind words.

avast > Settings > Troubleshooting > Enable\Disable self defense module.

@DavidR. Will exclude in MBAM. Thank you again!

@Tech. Will think about it seriously whether to disable Avast!'s self defense module. Have noted it for future reference. Had so far only 1 virus and that was in 2004 shortly after I got my first PC. knock wood So all virus chests have been empty all these years. ;D Makes one wonder whether all these AV’s etc. are working properly. just kidding Thank you again as well!

You’re both awesome.

No problem.
