File Missing of Avast

Hello !
I made a scan with HijackThis v1.99.1(I don’t know how to use it well), and in the report I found this :

Logfile of HijackThis v1.99.1
Scan saved at 00:53:31, on 18/09/2007
Platform: Windows XP SP2 (WinNT 5.01.2600)
MSIE: Internet Explorer v6.00 SP2 (6.00.2900.2180)

O23 - Service: avast! Mail Scanner - Unknown owner - C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\ashMaiSv.exe" /service (file missing)
O23 - Service: avast! Web Scanner - Unknown owner - C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\ashWebSv.exe" /service (file missing)
O23 - Service: Gizmo VoIP Service (Gizmo Plugin) - Unknown owner - C:\Program Files\GizmoPlugin\GizmoPlugin.exe (file missing)

and recently I get the an error when updating, sometimes the update is successful and sometimes it’s not. are the missing files the cause of this problem? how can I solve it?

is there anyone can help me?

First this is a problem with HJT 1.99.1 and not avast, if the files were missing then the web shield and internet mail providers wouldn’t work.

You can physically check that the files are there, but the best solution is to get the latest version of HJT 2.0.0.2 and this problem is gone.

HJT beta 2.0 resolves the missing file as it doesn’t show the /service but you need to ignore any references to 023 entries for avast, this is a bug in the HJT 1.99.1. Hijackthis is searching for ‘C:\Arquivos de programas\Alwil Software\Avast4\ashMaiSv.exe" /service’ (including double quotes and ‘/service’ parameter) as a file, this causes ‘file missing’, because only present is ‘C:\Arquivos de programas\Alwil Software\Avast4\ashMaiSv.exe’.

many thanks David and Tech for your satisfying answers, I think there’s nothing to worry about according to your explainations.
thank you all again.

Your welcome, nothing to worry about, but worth further investigation as you did.

Please, one more question.for more than one month, sometimes a red notification shows that the update’s failed. and sometimes the update works.
what’s wrong with the update?

What is your connection method, dial-up or broadband ?

Does this happen just after boot or at other times ?

At this period of time, near Microsoft’s Patch Tuesday, there can be issues with other update processes being squeezed out by windows update.

thank you David for being so helpful.
my connection method is dial-up modem.
it happens just a few moments after the boot.

I’m actually surprised by that as I too am on dial-up and I don’t allow my dial-up connection to connect automatically.

So the only thing I can think of is you don’t have the Program Settings, Update (Connections) correctly set up, e.g. I only connect to the internet using a dial-up modem. The update process for dial-up should check for the presence of a connection (it can’t establish one) before trying to update.

So if it is trying to update a connection is either present or you have it set to my computer is permanently connected to the internet.

Nourine -

Is your connection by dial-up modem automatic at boot time? If so, you might want to change that to manual so that that the computer has completed start-up … or, if possible, delay the automatic dial-up. I had a similar problem years ago on my last computer and cured the problem by manually starting the connection. I was on dial-up then and still am.

Manual I feel is always better as it would provide a useful check if something was trying to connect to the internet.

hi ! I think the problem of update’s error is done, I just unchecked (as I had before the problem started):
1 - I only connect to the internet using dial-up modem
and
2 - my computer is permanently connected to the internet

thank you so much for you help
