File Transfers on IM and Webmail attachments don't work!

Hey, I’m unable to attach files to emails (hotmail, lycos and outlook exchange online) and i can’t send/receive files on MSN messanger.

somebody help because people i’ve spoken to said it’s probably the virus checker as i’ve tried everything else.

I’m running WinXP and Avast is the antivirus software i’m using. and i’ve had this problem since i installed avast!

thanks.

Oz

Increase the timeout in Avast as well as in your email client. This should solve it.

Questions like this have been asked and answered before, please use the search option on this board before asking.

avast! timeout: Internet Mail provider > Customize > Advanced (tab)
email account timeout: generally, right click the email account, choose properties and the Advanced tab of settings.

Oz,

can you give us a little more information? Are you accessing Hotmail and Lycos with Outlook Express or through the Web interface?

If you are using the Web interface for Hotmail and Lycos then the email timeout information is irrelevant.

As far as I know the only OE access to Hotmail and Lycos is via WebDav (if your account is paid for or has “valued account” access). WebDav is not subject to the email timeout issues either.

Is is possible that you are using a third party program (like Hotmail Popper, MrPostman or FreePops)?

In another thread Ozzymandias said:

i'm accessing lycos, hotmail and outlook exchange - all through internet explorer.

nothing seems to attach, it always just gets stuck.

http://www.hotmail.com
http://mail.lycos.co.uk
http://owa.ncl.ac.uk → the outlook exchange client accessed through internet explorer

I can download files ok through the net, but attaching and sending doesn’t seem to work.

thanks guys

It is probably the same issue preventing you uploading the file for each product.

I have to doubt that this is an avast problem but … if you turn off the avast Web Shield does it make any difference to your ability to attach the files?

Are you using a firewall on your computer?

i’m using a the win xp firewall built in security feature and avast is the virus checker on it. i’ve looked at all the settings but haven’t got a clue how to solve this.

Let’s make this simpler then.

If you right click on the avast icon in the system tray, move your mouse to the menu item “Stop provider” and then select “Web Shield”.

When you have done that are you able to attach a file to send in the web interface to Hotmail?

Hi

I’m accessing the webmail through internet explorer and have also tried firefox.

I’ve installed anti spyware software and weeded out some software called navhelper.

however, it is still persisting and in Firefox i get a popup window saying “Document contains no data” whenever i try to attach a file in any of the email accounts i use (lycos, hotmail and outlook exchange).

Also, file transfer on MSN Messenger doesn’t go through. and even though it appears to transfer it always cancels at the last second

thanks

Oz

Well Oz,

I guess you just decided to ignore my suggestion.

However, your mention of navhelper makes me ask - did you have Norton AV installed on this system before you used Avast?
