Firefox older Web Rep Issues (Again)

I’ve had AVAST with the browser web rep (Firefox) activated for years on my old (now deceased ) Win XP laptop. Mostly no problems. But recently I’ve started using AVAST v8.0.1497 cleanly installed on a new Win 7 64bit Pro machine and the old web rep icon does not appear to be working.

I’d like this to work because I want to install Win XP on this PC either on a virtual machine or dual boot from another partition and this is the last version of AVAST I know functions perfectly with Win XP.

I’ll update AVAST on the Win 7 later but why would there be any reason for the old web rep not to work until then when the rest of this AVAST version is installed and happily doing its business apparently without issue?

Only thing I had to do was, as before, when Firefox introduced the Addon signing requirement, was change a Firefox config setting to allow the unsigned web rep addon. However this time when I added the icon to my toolbar it stubbornly remains greyed out.

Even more strange is that when I click on it I’m presented with the option to “Fill in your login data for your myavast.com account.” Name and Password with the option to Log in or As Anonymous User. Why and what for? I’m using AVAST, the addon was installed via AVAST own settings why do I have to sign in to get the web rep icon to function anyway?

Problem is that when I fill in the options, which I assume are my AVAST registered email address and Account Password nothing happens when I click on either button. If they were wrong then you’d expect a message to say so. The buttons ‘click’ but do nothing.

I’ve tried restarting Firefox after disabling the plugin, then re-enabling it also removing the plugin entirely then reinstalling it from AVAST > Settings. All seemed to go fine but the result is the same.

I remembered that in another thread here last December at the time of the Firefox Addon signings issue it was recommended to go to MyAvast.com and install the Firefox Web Rep addon as provided there.

Well I’ve gone looking for that again and I can’t find it. So if anyone can help with this or resolving this bizarre necessity to sign in for the web rep to work it would be appreciated.

avast 2015 works fine on Window XP systems that don’t support SSE-2 instructions.
avast 2016 works on XP systems that do support SSE-2

You can’t expect obsolete software (weprep) to work in new browsers.

Firefox has changed considerably from the days of the old WebRep, so using old avast versions and current firefox is likely to have issues. Even if you manage to get it running.

Firefox, requires that add-ons are digitally signed. That didn’t happen until the end of last year.

Look back in your old topic changing the about:config settings for xpinstall.signatures.required, there is no way I can see avast supporting old versions of avast. Possibly because there needs to be an modification required for each firefox/avast update.

I have no problem with the latest avast version 11.2.2262 with FF47.0 and XP Pro 32bit (my CPU supports SSE2).

Thanks for the replies but the fact is the AVAST version stated and its Web Rep icon were working fine with the most up to date Firefox version just over a week ago on the Win XP laptop before that died.

As said, all I had to do at the time of the Firefox Addon signing problem was make that one small edit to the Firefox config. I think I also had to install or re-install Web Rep from the AVAST web site. There’s nothing like that there now which I can find.

I don’t want to use the AOS plugin which I really didn’t like and also had problems itself when I tried it:-

If there is no way to get the old, simple, useful version to work on Win7 64bit with the same Firefox browser and AVAST version then I’ll go without and rely on the WebOfTrust plugin which does much the the same thing.
