After installing Avast 4.7 Home Edition…when i try to open firefox or IE the window itself is not opening…i have configured those proxy settings and all…but the window itself is not opening…but if i see the processes in the task manager firefox.exe and Iexplorer.exe are running…but those windows are not appearing at all…please help me out…but if i uninstall Avast and restart computer everything just works fine…i have installed and uninstalled Avast several times…please help…other than this Avast is simply superb…
Are you using any other antivirus in your computer? Did you use in the past?
Any other security program that could interfere? This is a very strange error as you can imagine, tons of users, like me now, use a browser and avast…
Which firewall are you using and, are you allowing avast in your firewall?
My god…!! Avast forced me to make system restore…!!! i’m not using any other antivirus or Firewall…i even turned off Windows firewall…still i’m not able to open either firefox or IE or Opera…all other programs are just working fine…i even faced difficulty in uninstalling Avast…whats going on…? please help me to use firefox and IE …please…
I suggest an installation from the scratch:
- Uninstall avast from Control Panel first.
- Boot.
- Use Avast Uninstall for complete uninstallation.
- Boot.
- Install again the last version.
- Boot.
- Check and post the results.
But are you sure you do not have any other security program - now or in the past - that is blocking avast function?
No improvement…same result…i’m damn sure that i dont have any antivirus or firewall…
(really a very good response from this forum…these forums are so active…i’m surprised)
Can you restore the default settings?
Which is your Windows? XP? Vista?
I hope you’re not complaining against us that are trying to help… Maybe it’s a sense of humor that we, non-native English talkers, don’t understand.
are you mentioning about the proxy settings…? If so , yes. I’m able to restore them…I’m using Windows Xp…
Yes. Can you try?
By the way, please, post the last 100-150 lines of avast log: C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\DATA\log\Setup.log
since i have restored my system i have lost those data…i restored my system because when i tried to uninstall Avast from Add or Remove Programs in Control Panel a window just popped up and closed when i clicked the remove button…is that very important for you…? If so i’ll again install Avast…but i can post here the log only if i uninstall Avast since only then i can open Firefox or any other problems…
It shows what’s right and wrong with your installation. If you want us to help, if you want avast back, this is a good source of info. For sure, there is no sense on avast blocking the access to the browsers, this is a work of firewall and avast is not a firewall.
Can you post the contents of this file (it’s a extensionless file, open it on Notepad)
C:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts
Contents of that file…

This is a sample HOSTS file used by Microsoft TCP/IP for Windows.
This file contains the mappings of IP addresses to host names. Each
entry should be kept on an individual line. The IP address should
be placed in the first column followed by the corresponding host name.
The IP address and the host name should be separated by at least one
space.
Additionally, comments (such as these) may be inserted on individual
lines or following the machine name denoted by a ‘#’ symbol.

38.25.63.10 x.acme.com # x client host
127.0.0.1 localhost
I surely want Avast back…
here is the log…i installed and uninstalled Avast for getting the log…

waiting for your reply…
Done. It’s clean and ok.
Your log is ok… it’s becoming difficult each step… I’m not being able to imagine what is wrong…
If you go Start Menu > Mozilla Firefox > Firefox (Safe Mode)
will is start Firefox?
when i click firefox or IE or opera…the sand clock comes and then nothing happens…if i go and check in the Task Manager firefox.exe, iexplore.exe and opera.exe will be running…but i’m not able to see any of the windows…
Even its Safe Mode?
but i dint try firefox safe mode…oh my god…!! if i want to try that now…i’ve to again install, try that and uninstall the software…but IE also not coming na…(at present i’m browsing with you in firefox only…)
