Firewall?

Let me start with definition of firewall. Quote:…" firewall is a software or hardware-based network security system that controls the incoming and outgoing network traffic by analyzing the data packets and determining whether they should be allowed through or not, based on applied rule set. Firewalls can be defined in many ways according to your level of understanding. A firewall establishes a barrier between a trusted, secure internal network and another network (e.g., the Internet) that is not assumed to be secure and trusted."

Can any1 please explain how can I control incoming and outgoing TRAFFIC in Avast 8.0.1497 firewall? Why I want to do it?
Pictures explain why. They do not know who is it, but they let that “somebody” freely enter my computer. Firewall? Really?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Simple_Service_Discovery_Protocol will give you details of that address used by Upnp

239.x.x.x is the private multicast IP range. Just like 192.168.x.x and the others are used for private networks.

It’s trying to “find” something by multicasting.

The information I could find on this IP 239.255.255.250 THIS is a outbound Upnp address, your router will class it as DOS-Outbound. this is because your network device is trying to make it’s self visible to your home computers (which use Upnp to see each other) this is NOT some one else. this is your own device, telling you it is there. if it’s a nuisance, disable Upnp on the devices settings page. to clarify. you are NOT being HACKED.

Nice paranoia comments there Craig

Yeah you have to filter out the paranoids, the logical answers are in-between them

The comments in that link are the funniest thing I have seen for a long time ;D

Especially the one that says he is going to sue whoever is spamming him ;D he’ll be taking a law suit out on himself ::slight_smile:

Yeah, I spilled coffee reading that. ))

This IP is hacking my system and NOrton never caught it. I will search till I find out who it belongs to and then I will sue them. - 2011-04-25

Hey, fanboys, thanx for your “funny” answers. You did not answer my main question: How can I restrict ANY incoming and outgoing traffic in (attention, please) Avast IS 8.0.1497? BTW if those “sighs” are nonsense, why they are there? Again: I do not want to restrict software on my computer to send or receive data! I already did that. So my concern is still there, no mater how you did tried to ignore it of make just fun of it.
Firewall should/must have this functionality, or cannot be called firewall and it is almost useless! Any brainstorm now?

essexboy, thanx for your reply. I do not need to “Allow” or “Deny” installed software entering internet. I need to restrict TRAFFIC going thru Avast (attention) version 8.0.1497 firewall. Nothing else. Thanx anyway.

I no longer have V8 but if you set the firewall to ask as a default then you will need to clear it… Apart from required ones like windows system, Avast updates and any related to your ISP

So, no answer mean, there is no way, no how to restrict network traffic going thru avast 8.0.1497 firewall. That’s what I tough. This “firewall” is not firewall after all. Thanx for clear that for me.

Go to firewall/advanced settings/packet rules, and add a rule for the IP/protocol you are interested in and choose allow/block to your liking.

Lukor, thanx for your reply. I’m using Avast IS 8.0.1497.
