First Time Update Fail!

First the first time in my life, avast! couldn’t manually update.

I wanted to check for updates. It was going to download the first file. No connection to the server. Even though I am connected to the net and ie7 works fine. I wanted to close it, cause it was taking so long. Closed it but the avast antivirus program froze up. That never happened before. Forced it to shut down.

Why did this happen? Firewall doesn’t block it! >:(

*** Update ***

A box came up saying it took 4 mins and 38 sec.

Then avast tried to update it self. It did, but very slow.

So I can update, but it takes longer than before.

Was avast.setup running in Task Manager (Processes)

Do you use a Proxy ?
What are your settings for, Program Settings, Update (Connections), Proxy… button (see image) ?

How do you know the firewall doesn’t block, logs, or just because it says it is allowed in the firewall application permissions ?

What is your firewall ?
Does it allow avast.setup internet access ?

  • If it does delete the entries for them reconnect to the internet and do a manual update, this will force the firewall to ask permission again.

Could be just a temporary connection trouble… who knows…

Tech is right. Now it works fine.

And DavidR, Everything is always listed below my posts. I am running ZoneAlarm 7.0

Thanks guys anyway for your help.

One more thing, How should I set the settings for the Proxy in avast!?

I must remember to look at the signatures,
I must remember to look at the signatures,
I must remember to look at the signatures,
I must remember to look at the signatures ;D

If you don’t use a proxy you never said (?) then as in my image Direct connection (no proxy).

I have no idea.

I have bigpond broad band ADSL. I used to use a proxy for the avast! and zonealarm problem.

But I took it off because it only happens in zonealarm pro.

Works fine.

If you don’t know it is highly unlikely that your ISP ‘requires’ you to use a proxy, set as in the above image (it is probably the default).

The proxy re Zone Alarm and avast is the localhost proxy of the web shield, it is as the name implies local to your system and not to do with connecting to the internet.

Right click the ‘a’ blue icon.
Choose Program Settings.
Go to Update (Connections) tab of settings.
Click on ‘Proxy’ button.
Set ‘Auto Detect’ and click on the button ‘Test connection’.
See what you get…

It says the settings are correct.

So I guess it’s good then!

Thanks guys once again.

Your welcome.

You might want to change your avatar for another, resize or use this one (with original typo). We try to keep avatars around 100 X 100 for those who don’t have high resolution monitors.

Or redo as it has a typo auesome, should be awesome.
