Fix Now Doesn't Work

Just installed the FREE version of Avast. And after the scan was complete, I went to the Summary section and when I click on the Fix Now button, nothing happens. When I click, the Turn On button next to Real-Time Shields, nothing happens. Is a defective download?

Try avast repair and reboot

For a repair of avast. Windows, Add Remove programs, select ‘avast! Anti-Virus,’ click the Change/Remove button from the pop-up window, scroll down to Repair, click next and follow.

Rebooted (again) and tried the repair option. The buttons still don’t work.

What antivirus did you have before avast ?
Have you removed/uninstalled it ?
Have you run a uninstall tool for the program to remove all leftovers ?

I have the same problem.

The program has been running perfectly until now.
It was installed right after installation of Win XP.
That means that no other virus program has been installed.

I have tried to repair it, but the shields still wont start up.

Strange…You may try removing it with the uninstall utility and doing a new clean install

Have (or did) you another Anti-Virus installed in this system, if so what was it and how did you get rid of it ?

If you had 4.8 before it may be better to do a clean reinstall follow these steps:

  • Download the latest version of avast, 5.0.507 http://www.avast.com/free-antivirus-download and save it to your HDD, somewhere you can find it again (if you didn’t save your last download). Use that when you reinstall.

  • Download the avast! Uninstall Utility, aswClear5.exe find it here and save it to your HDD (it has uninstall tools for both 4.8 and 5.0).

    1. Now uninstall (using add remove programs, if you can’t do that start from the next step), reboot.- 2. run the avast! Uninstall Utility from safe mode, first for 4.8 if previously installed and then for 5.0, once complete reboot into normal mode.- 3. install the latest version, reboot.

  • your OS (also sp)
  • your system specs
  • other security software on your machines
  • etc.

I’ve been a long-time user of Avast and it’s the only anti-virus program I’ve been running. I’m trying the uninstall now and will post an update.

Save avast! 5 download & avast! 5 uninstall tool to desktop.

Run avast! 5 uninstall tool in safe mode, reboot twice.

Boot into safe mode with networking & install avast! 5, reboot.

Worked for me & others.

But first post your setup log so that ALWIL can find the cause for avast! 5 not starting.

An uninstall and reinstall worked for me as well. Don’t know why it didn’t work the first time though.
