FIXED : Latest update has made browsing impossible. What should I do???

Hope someone can help me. Over the last few days (since updating to version 4.8.1290). Browsing has been impossible at times, pages take forever to load (and that’s if they do load before timing out).

I am using Firefox and Sunbelt firewall, which I have been using for years without any of these problems. Computer is running Win XP (service pack 2).

It’s only the browsing that is affected, as I am able to download emails in Outlook Express/Outlook at the same speed as before.

However when I terminate the “Standard Shield” and “Web Shield” then browsing is back to normal. Tried the same experiment with both shields paused and it’s still slow/pages do not load.

I’ve been using Avast for a good number of years with the same firewall/browser etc, in the past and I have never had these problems. It’s only over the last few days since the update that it has started happening.

Hope someone can shed some light on this problem.

p.s. I thought maybe my version of Avast had become corrupted in some way, so I even un-installed it and then re-booted and installed it again, but the problem still persists!!!

UPDATE: Found error message in the following places if that helps to diagnose the problem:

The avast folder is full or error messages. Avast > Data > Log > Error/Warning files which have a lot of data in them.

Also from Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Event Viewer > Antivirus > is full of hundreds of Warnings and Errors showing avast as the source.

Are you also running ThreatFire? Lots of reported issues on their forum saying TF4 clashes with avast! Web Shield causing slowdowns.

Try updating your windows xp to sp3. that might fix some problems.

Hello, I expierienced the same problem. Terminating the Web-Shield (not pausing) braught back the common browsing-speed. I think, there’s a little bug within the 4.8-1290-Update and i hope it will be patched soon.

I have not experienced any browsing delays with the latest update on my XP Pro SP3 system.

Hmmm… other users will be complaining if it was a bug…
Which is your firewall?

Think I have solved the problem. What I did was I uninstalled my firewall (Sunbelt Kerio), restarted my PC and then reinstalled the firewall. That sorted out the problem.

So if anyone is experiencing slow/impossible connection speeds after an update, then it may be an idea to try uninstalling/reinstalling your firewall to see if that sorts out the problem.

Thanks for posting back. Some glitches could, in fact, be corrected by this way…
