ok, so i want to uninstall avast (i use the free version) but i set a password which i forgot, now i cannot uninstall it. i’ve tried everything from using a third party force-uninstaller, cmd prompt and even regedit, but i still cannot remove the software. it is taking all my cpu hence causing my google to always crash. please recommend me a way to help uninstall it (i will not phone customer support as i prefer using email.)
hi
you must uninstall avast with its tool and especially in safe mode.
you can also delete the file “aswresp.dat” after disabling self-defense

nb:there was an avast link that gave the procedure to reset the password (deleting the “aswresp.dat” file) but it seems to be broken for now :-[

I found nothing under remove. A clean install may be the only option.
The link I give was once available, it was explained the 2 methods: Avastclean in safe mode and delete the file “aswresp.dat”… I’m sure (I’ve already helped users with this )
The link you give doesn’t match with my Ui (I don’t have the “Passwords” brick) but I think I need to re-install to have it.
Moreover, if you lost your password, you won’t be able to reset it (step 3) because you have to enter it first (step 2)… I don’t see how this method can work :-\
You are correct Chris. That’s why I said a clean install would be needed.
I find that file in two locations:
C\ProgramData\Avast Software\Avast\aswResp.dat
C\Users\All Users\Avast Software\Avast\aswResp.dat
Maybe that will help.
