Free AV prompts for virus definitions update despite being set to automatic

Today I have Free Antivirus (24.4.6112) saying that my virus definitions are obsolete (October 31) and proposing to check for updates.

However I have not changed my settings for updates, which (as I have verified) are always the same: automatic update for virus definitions, manual update for the program.

What could be the reason for such an unexpected behaviour?

Latest version of Free is: 24.10.9535 (build 24.10.9535.881)
Do you have a reason to stay with 24.4.6112?

You could try doing a “REPAIR APP” from Avast>Menu>Settings>Troubleshooting

Thanks for your answer.
I know my version is “old”, as I’m usually very cautious and… slow with (any) software updates and upgrades.
However my main concern, now, is to understand the reason why my Avast Free is asking for virus definitions update despite those updates being set to automatic.
Something that had never happened to me before in many years and which, therefore, looks somehow suspicious unless clearly explained.

That is good combination IMO.
If Avast is not working properly, my first recourse is to do a REPAIR APP as I mentioned in my earlier post. That often fixes a glitch that may have been introduced. If you have done that and you are still getting alerts to check manually for virus definition updates, then report back

Im on the paid version and ive had this for years. set to auto update which does for daily definitions but the program update is always sitting there in red to manually update.
nothing to fix on mine but i think some of us this seems to be just the norm.
If i see a new post for a new update i check randomly and within 4-7 days its waiting for a manual update. the updates are sent out staggered around the world so we get them at different times.

I did follow your advice and tried the “Repair App” thing, but nothing seems to have changed, even after a system reboot.
I still have the alert for virus definitions and if I look in the Update section of the Settings I still get the same… incongruity:
the warning about the definitions being outdated AND also the “automatic update” option enabled, as you can see in the attached image.

Alerts

Maybe the program version has become “too old” for the current virus definitions, so that they can not be updated without updating also the program itself?

I seem to remember something happening like this a few years back, but recovered to automatic definitions updates after first doing a manual definitions update.
Have you succeeded in updating your definitions by doing a manual update?

Another simple thing to try. Change the setting from Automatic to Manual, close the Avast User Interface (UI). Open UI again and change back to Automatic.

No. I do not think that is true.

I’m afraid I’m the only one to blame: it seems I mistakenly blocked the application instup.exe when, some day last week, the firewall (ZA) reported that it was trying to access the Internet.
Since such a report had never occurred before, I thought it was a suspicious program and, as usual, I blocked it (without thinking it could be Avast related).

So there was nothing wrong here on the part of Avast, but if anything some weird behaviour on the part of the firewall.
Thanks again for your kind help.
I’m sorry for wasting your time.
