Free Avast not enough Quota boot time scanner xp.

Free Avast not enough Quota boot time scanner xp. On another computer. I installed xp and added service pack 3. Plenty of space and memory.

What services needs to be enabled in services.msc for the boot time scanner to work? I think one of my protection software may have disabled stuff that Avast needs to work at boot time.

Here is the error code.
avworkInitialize Error:0xC0000017 {Not Enough Quota}

None. It works before any service is loaded.

Which are your other protection software?

Windows Worms Doors Cleaner Wwdc.exe by gkweb (All fully disabled)
I got from this website a long time ago firewallleaktester dot com

Grc Universal Plug & Play Enable/Disable. Unpnp.exe
Grc DCOMbob.exe dont use because WWDC does the same thing plus more.

I have a suspicion it is one of the files in Service pack 3 that may be the problem and not your software. I thought it might by Dep, it wasn’t. The only other thing I can think of, is Acpi was not installed, when xp was installed.

I don’t have a problem with XP Pro and SP3 and I ran Windows Worms Doors Cleaner without a problem.

I have DCOMbob.exe, Unpnp.exe and shootthemessenger.exe

Download Malwarebytes’ Anti-Malware (MBAM) then install it then update it and run a Quick scan:
http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam.php

Go to Secunia Online Software Inspector then run it to see what applications are vulnerable:
http://secunia.com/vulnerability_scanning/online

Thank you. Just to see I did a clean install of xp and then installed sp2. Same error message at boot. When starting windows xp on that machine, Avast takes forever to load.

When does the next free avast full download version come out?

Edit…

I was reading about boot switches
I have my drives in 4 partions.
So, how would you show
For example, you want to scan drive C: and Drive D: through scan, plus scan in archives then if infection is found move to chest (not system files). Then tell it to ignore the system memory.

I hope I explained that correctly.

What are the specifications of the system as to CPU type and speed and how much RAM does the system have?

Go to Control Panel then System and you can read the specifications there.

Did Avast increase the system memory requirements from the last full release?
That possible the reason.

The reason I got Avast was because of the boot scanner.

What is the new system memory requirement for Avast? My system I installed xp on is a Pentium 3. The speed is 500 mhz but some software dont see that speed, it is reporting a lower speed than it really is. I tested it out to confirm that is actually 500 mhz.

How much RAM does the system have?

On my XP Pro system:
Image Name | Mem Usage | Peak Mem Usage
ashDisp.exe 3,036K 4,120K
ashMaiSv.exe 584K 53,328K
ashServ.exe 10,224K 131,336K
ashWebSv 400K 52,896K
aswUpdSv 232K 1,780K

There is supposed to be a new release coming out soon for memory relief and I believe the last release did rase the memory requirements.

Please post the file \Data\Log\aswBoot.log

85MB of free memory before the scanner initialization… seems that it’s not enough anymore, as the virus database grows.
[I’d certainly wouldn’t call it “plenty”]

The situation should be significantly better in avast! 5.0.

That is strange. My memory is 128 mb. I hope my memory is not going bad.

128MB RAM is enough to load Windows98 but hopeless for XP.

I had an XP Home system that had 512MB RAM that I purchased back in 2002 and it still works well but now its as slow as a week in jail.

The figure is ‘free memory,’ that which is unused by other things.

256MB is considered the minimum for winXP if my memory (excuse the pun) serves me well. upgrade your RAM to a minimum of 512MB and you should notice better overall system performance to now. Better still 1GB and you can kiss goodbye to RAM issues on XP for the most part.

Memory is really inexpensive now so you should take advantage it will really make a difference.

According to Microsoft 64mb is the minimum, 128mb is recommend. A lot of software says that including Avast. Now, if more is required, it should say that. I just bought xp sp3. My system can only support 512 (Either slot-no mandatory slot) total.

Firefox 3.5.3 is a memory hog but I think that is a bug.

My current system runs pretty fast. I know how to tweak things, I had xp before on another computer, and I was able to run a boot scan with an older version of Avast, sorry I don’t remember the version. This old machine had 128 mb. In fact, most OEM with the original xp had only 128mb installed.

I am not saying you are wrong. I am not sure you are correct, if it was just me getting the error message, then I would say yes. A lot of people are getting that error message for different reasons. I just have to wait to see what happen with avast 5

I am not a gamer.

That might well be the case (I honestly thought it was 256MB), but it really is totally unreasonable.

What you also have to consider is when you add other applications they might have minimums, but you should consider the cumulative effect of all these minimums would require a lot of Swapfile (pagefile.sys) use, swapping out stuff in memory to the HDD as memory is used.

This puts extra load on your HDD and also becomes a bottleneck as this data is swapped in and out of RAM/HDD. Now before windows is fully functional, as in the boot-time scan I don’t know if this swapping is possible; so avast has to work with the available resources and the virus signature file is of the order of 28MB and that too presumably has to be loaded into memory before any scan takes place. The physical boot-time scan is also going to be memory intensive too, so the cumulation of all of this could well give a problem with limited RAM. So whatever you can do to up that would be worthwhile I believe.

So regardless of what either MS or Alwil suggest as Minimum RAM, I believe it should be taken with a small pinch of salt and opt for realistic working minimums (yes both parties could do with updating that minimum requirement). Vista gives some ridiculously small minimum but most have found that less than 1GB is hard work.

Unfortunately, I cant get ram right now, I just bought xp sp2 (I installed sp3 disk). However, chkdsk does run at boot for your information. The only way I could get more ram now, if it quits. Money is tight, I really don’t want to spend it for ram, buying xp and the service pack disk was enough. The reasons I got xp was because of flash, pay bills, and read web pages. I didn’t say avast didn’t work in xp. A little slow to load at first, but that does not bug me. Plus, where I live, it is very hard to find a computer store that would have ram. Also, Windows 98se hates more that 128 mb of ram. I dual boot.

This makes me wonder if Avast hates be installed on the 2 partition

Fat32
Partition one-Windows 98se
Partition two-Windows xp
Partition three- No operating system but used to share files.

Maybe I need to reverse the two
Fat32
Partition one-Windows xp
Partition two-Windows 98se

(Note, the error happen without the boot manager installed, I just got tired of using windows 98se fdisk and windows xp disk management to go back and forth.)

I may have found the reason why Avast boot scanner does not work. My Rage XL pci driver is blocking it. This loads, when the system loads and uses 8 MB which cant be changed.
