Full system scan 4% complete after 7 hours?!?

I think the subject line says it all. I’m running Avast Free Antivirus 6.0.1000 on an iMac in Boot Camp (ver. 3.2). Any suggestions as to why this is running so slowly?

27" iMac Quad-core i5 2.8 GHz, 4GB RAM, Boot Camp 3.2 running 64-bit Windows 7, 1TB 7200-rpm Serial ATA hard drive, Avast Free Antivirus 6.0.1000, virus def. version 110326-1

Hello jerome309 and welcome to the forum.

Did you just upgrade to version 6.0.1000 or do a clean install? If you had Avast before this version, what was the previous version?

  1. What is your OS, 32 or 64-bit?
  2. What other security software do you currently have or did you have in the past on this machine including:
  • Antivirus (AV)
  • Firewall (FW)
  • Trial versions of AV, FW and other security programs
  • Other security software
  • If they were in the past, how did you remove them (the vendor’s uninstaller’s tool or another way)?

You can try an Avast Repair to see if this fixes your problem:

  • Go to Control Panel > Add/Remove programs > Avast Antivirus.
  • Scroll down and choose Repair function in the pop-up window.
  • Reboot.

After we get your reply to the above questions, we will proceed from there. It is possible that if you had prior security software some remnants are causing the problem and we can give you uninstaller tools to fix this, or software known to cause conflicts may be an issue. If this is not the case, you may also have a bad install/corrupt and we may have you uninstall and do a clean install using an uninstaller tool. So we will await your reply. Thank you.

I am afraid, with similar setup I really cannot help.

Sorry, I missed that. Disregard this questions as you already answered it.

I thing a clean install mey help you… Or you might be having more data or you may have a large number of compressed files
