Full virus scan was stopped before it finished

I’m running Avast Free Antivirus on Windows 10.
I repeatedly get this message in Scan history: ‘Full Virus Scan was stopped before it finished. We suggest running it again.’
Software and virus definitions are up to date, I’ve repaired via Apps and Features, and the same thing keeps happening. I’d be very grateful for advice. Thanks.

What if you tried a Quick Scan ?

Personally I don’t run on-demand scans.
With a resident on-access antivirus like avast, the need for frequent on-demand scans is much depreciated. For the most part the on-demand scan is going to be scanning files that would be otherwise be dormant or inert. If they were active files then the on-access file system shield would be scanning them before being created, modified, opened or executed.

Thank you. I see your point.
I’ve inadvertently been without an antivirus for a week or two so want to run a full system scan to be on the safe side.

Try a Quick Scan and see if that completes.

If not try after a restart if you haven’t already done that.
If you have you could try an Avast Repair - AvastUI > Menu > Settings > General > Troubleshooting > Repair APP - Restart after completion. It may be worth Backing Up your Settings (Same Area).

Hi - having this same issue - I had a msg that there was a virus that couldn’t be put into quarantine & to run full scan. The scan says it has completed but “we were unable to scan some files” and the scan history says the “virus scan was stopped before it finished”. I’ve had Avast support scan my PC & no virus was found there either but it is disconcerting to see the full scan hasn’t scanned all files.

Do you have archive or zip files? I am not sure, but maybe the message means that avast has not been able to scan files contained within an archive or zip file folder.

I do have a few zip files (not may) however as there is no indication as to what files have not been scanned it is impossible to know if it is these that were missed. I was wondering if there was some possibility of extracting the details of what has not been scanned but can’t find it anywhere.

I ‘suspect, speculate’ (not affirmative) that because some files couldn’t be scanned, it is somehow reports unable to complete.

Files that can’t be scanned are just that, not an indication they are infected. Files that are in packed archives, very large and encrypted files may not be able to be scanned. If said file were unpacked and or run then the on-access File System Shield should scan them.

When I’m not to busy I will kick of a Full Virus Scan and see if it completes.

OK I have has some time to run a Full Virus Scan.

It completed in 30min 30sec, there were some files it couldn’t scan (see attached image), nothing specific, nothing I’m concerned about. Is this what you are seeing ?

Avast-Full-Scan-Complete-30min-30sec

Thanks; yes, that’s what I was seeing.

That I would say is normal as some files haven’t been scanned because of what I said before that’s normal.

It has stopped/completed the scan (that is what this image signifies), but is reporting it was unable to scan some files it is merely reporting this - on completion of the scan.

Thanks - yes, that’s what I had as well (4 hours though!!!). Only ran the scan as a virus was flagged - still not sure what happened to it as it hasn’t appeared on the scans or the support run kit. Anyway thanks for the reassurance.

You’re welcome.

The more data you have on the system the longer it will take, it is as it says a (very) Full Scan. I keep my system as tidy as I can and the two drives are relatively small as you can see from signature below my post.

@DavidR I dont think signatures show anymore on this new forum style.

Have you got one (that I can’t see) ?
I can see mine, which is kind of pointless if no one else can see it :frowning:

In your Profile Settings > Summary, Preferences > Profile > Account - Enable Signatures and check the option ‘See user signatures below posts’

Which is probably why you cant see it - which kind of makes it useless - if it is off by default.

Je ne suis pas certaine de bien comprendre mais il me semble que Avast Free Antivirus / Premium Security tel que présenté ici est le meilleur choix pour moi

That’s it. Like you say, noone will see signature as is set=off by default. So unfortunately no point referring to it like that.
I dont use a signature anyway.
