My company was hit with a variant of Gaobot last week. They got a newly created fix from Symantec on 8/3. The latest gaobot fix from avast (home edition) was mid July. I install XP patches as soon as I receive notice about them.
Is it safe for me to dial into my company’s network? I’m not 100% sure that they got it all (in the company network), and if it’s a variant newer than the latest avast version, is it a risk?

Since there hasn't been discovered a new variant last week, they did (do?) not have theirsecurity setup properly.

Latest update released by Symantec was yesterday.
When you connect to any network (internet, lan etc) there will always be a small possibillity that your system gets infected. There is always the virus before there is a removal method. But if you have setup your security properly, the risk of getting infected is very very small. Make sure you have the latest vps installed as well as all security updates/patches for the os and applications you use. And use a firewall (best is a router with hardware firewall)
