Yestewrday I purchased Pro 5 Avast. I have downloaded the Activation folder three times and each time when I am asked to enter the activation key I am told that Windows (XL) does not know what programme produced it and therefore cannot open it…I use Firefox.
The manufacturer I bought it from are of no help whatsoever and sent me here. Any Techo’s out there that can help a PC Numpty?

I don’t use the 5.0 Pro version so I’m not familiar with what you are experiencing.
That said, avast Pro uses a license file and that is something like, License.avastlic, is that the file name you downloaded ?
If so you shouldn’t need to open it, just save it to a folder on your Hard Disk where you find it. Open the avast 5.0 User Interface (UI) by left clicking on the avast icon in the tray. Click Maintenance, Registration and use the Insert avast! Pro Antivirus / … … license file button, see image (whilst this is for the avast free version it should be similar). Now you should navigate to the location that you saved the avast license file.

Thank you for respomnding…the document was in binary code./I am Scots.but thanks for trying…I think I’ll just eat the money I paid to these people…AVAST…and runn the free one.
Step one: Download/Save the License file attachment from your email and Save it to My Documents or Desktop.
Step two: Open avast and go to insert license file.
Step three: Select the file you saved in your My Documents or Desktop.
Step four: Enjoy.
Make sure you downloaded the PRO or FREE version of the antivirus. Free will upgrade to PRO with the license file installed.
If you downloaded the Internet Security version, Uninstall and Reinstall the correct version (PRO) and try again.
