I recently got this and I don’t know how to get rid of it!
It all started when Avast! detected a virus. My computer then locked up and I had to hard reboot the system. When I logged back in, I notice a huge slowdown in startup and then this popped up. I then issued a boot time scan and deleted a good amount of worms, virus, and trojans. After logging back in from the boot scan, this still popped up with the red x on the bottom right corner telling me that XP needs to install updates to prevent viruses, blah, blah, you get the point. Random popups also come up and that’s really annoying.
So I am here now, asking for help form the Avast! community.
This is a rogue program trying to scare you into an inappropriate action, like visiting a site to either get updates or have a scan done, this is suicidal or you really could be in trouble.
If you haven’t already got this software (freeware), download, install, update and run it and report the findings (it should product a log file).
MalwareBytes Anti-Malware (relatively good on rogueware removal), On-Demand only in free version http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/malwarebytes/mbam-setup.exe, right click on the link and select Save As or Save File (As depending on your browser), save it to a location where you can find it easily later. - 2. SUPERantispyware On-Demand only in free version.
Don’t worry about reported tracking cookies they are a minor issue and not one of security, allow SAS to deal with them though. - See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HTTP_cookie.
