I just down loaded avast 5 (orange ball). I am running Windows XP. I registered and received a license key but when I attempt to enter the key (copy and paste) I get an error message saying that it is an invalid key. What should I do?
Is this avast 5 free ?
On-line registration is very simple and it’s the preferred method for all users of avast Free Antivirus 5.0 installed on a computer with standard Internet connectivity. To perform on-line registration follow these steps: http://support.avast.com/index.php?_m=knowledgebase&_a=viewarticle&kbarticleid=459
Hi…
You’re not dumb.
If I remember correctly, version 5 does this automatically without you having to cut and paste a key. See Pondus’s link above.
Regards…
Yes this is avast 5 free. I did those steps and received an email with the key. After registering my screen still says not registered. Should I register again?
Also when I hit the register button it takes me to another screen where it offers me the opportunity to upgrade. I just hit the register button and it goes away and nothing happens.
I’ve just installed Avast 5 on a friends computer and gone through this, too.
The registration popup is a little confusing, for sure.
I’m reasonably savvy with working these things out but had to read that popup fairly closely before entering the required info and submitting it, and my friends computer was then registered successfully, and immediately.
But right up to the time the info “registration successful” appeared, I wasn’t 100% sure whether I was registering the free version or attempting to upgrade.
Wish I’d taken a screenshot for you, because my memory is a bit fuzzy about exactly what and where the info was entered, but I suggest you try again registering it from within the GUI> maintenance tab.
I understand that Avast would quite like users to upgrade to one of the pro versions, but this popup could really use a bit of clarification.
I am pretty sure I am hitting the correct button. I even tried selecting the upgrade button and it did take me to a site to purchase a one year upgrade for three computers. I don’t know I just have the worst luck with computers and had I known it would be so difficult to uninstall I never would have installed it. Can’t be uninstalled through the Add/Remove programs feature in Control Panel.
Sounds like you’ve got one or two problems.
This sort of thing can usually be sorted by an uninstall/cleanup/reinstall, but first, what AV did you use before Avast?
Any other security programs installed? Any problems with the computer otherwise?
Following your reply, I can post some step-by-step stuff, and download link/s to tool/s you might need to run. Worry not. Chances are good this will go smoothly, in the end.
I suggest an installation from scratch:
- Download the latest version of avast! Uninstall Utility and save it.
- Download the latest avast! version and save it.
- Uninstall avast from Control Panel (if possible). If, for any reason, you can’t run it, try booting in Safe Mode and doing it from there. Anyway, boot after that.
- Run the avast! Uninstall Utility saved on 1. If, for any reason, you can’t run it, try booting in Safe Mode and doing it from there. Anyway, boot after you’ve run it.
- Install avast! using the setup saved on 2. Boot.
- Register your free copy or add the license key for Pro.
- Check and post the results.
^^ what he said, plus you should, prior to reinstalling the new Avast version, run the appropriate removal tool for any previous installed AV.

Hi, since I installed avast 5 on my PC, which is quite old, PC got really slow. Actually, it slows PC so practically I am not able to work on it. Can somebody provide me with some peace of advice, how to solve hat problem? Maybe, it is not necessary for me to use all protection provided by avast 5? Thanks
We will need more information to be able to help you:
- Which OS are you using? Is it up to date?
- Do you use a firewall? Which one?
- Do you have any other antivirus installed in your system? Did you have in the past?
- Any other security programs that could interfere?
- How much RAM do you have?
