On 6/10/04 a new version of Avast Home Edition installed itself and since then two things have happened.
One is the scan wouldn’t run…it would freeze up when I tried to start it the usual way.
After toying with stuff I now can get it to run.
The other thing is I have lost over 12 gigs of hard drive space.
I tried running defragmentation but it stops at a temp folder that is an Avast folder…and this folder’s properties are over 12 gigs on the hard drive…anyone know why this happened with the new version?
Anyone know if I can safely delete this folder?
I really need the disk space back on this old computer…but don’t want to lose Avast protection.
Can anyone offer any help here?
Thank you.

Hi,
What Win do you have ?
Are all Windowsupdates applied ? CHECK!!
please supply the full path/folder name of the 12GB-folder
(could be temp. unpacked files by avast that didn’t get deleted after a crash)
have you tried disk-cleanup & defrag in SafeMode (F8-Boot) ?
or a boot-time scan (if you have Win NT/2000/XP )?
have you tried an Onlinescan with Trend (see below) or www.ravantivirus.com ?
Thank you for your reply.
The temp folder is located in the main user(me)temp folder under local settings which all is under Documents and Settings…
I use Windows 2000 and do have the latest windows updates.
I was able to run a disk clean up/scan in regular mode but have not yet tried to run the defrag in safe mode…
why do you think it is worthwhile to run the other virus scan?
Thank you.

@1) empty the TEMP-folder completely after a reboot (delete all files/folders in it…)
@2) because avast froze initially,
but you can also try defrag & clean-up in SafeMode first, and then do a full scan with updated avast…
Whocares…
thank you…I’ll go ahead and try your suggestions…
I appreciate your help.
