Last night I noticed something a bit odd when I was trying to search for something using Google. I was asked to solve a CAPTCHA and was told that there may be something wrong with my PC. I decided to ignore it since it seemed to go away soon after (without me solving any CAPTCHAs). Today, I got home from work to find that I’ve been completely blocked out of using Google at all.
I get an error page saying “We’re sorry… but your computer or network may be sending automated queries. To protect our users, we can’t process your request right now.” with a link to https://support.google.com/websearch/answer/86640
I’m fairly confident that my PC isn’t infected with any malware/a botnet. I moved and started a new job 2 1/2 weeks ago and I’ve barely used my computer at all. The little time that I have used it has been on trusted websites (from what I remember). I haven’t downloaded anything aside from program updates/games on Steam. I tried searching using wifi on my phone and was also blocked, so Google seems to have blocked my IP address entirely.
I could be wrong, but I’m guessing it could be due to some of these factors:
-
It’s possible that my roommate’s laptop is infected, but there’s not much I can do about that right now. I do know however that he doesn’t use it very often, and it hasn’t been on in several hours at least. I don’t think my roommate does much aside from browse Facebook, though it is possible that he may have picked something nasty up.

I’m currently using crappy internet service provided by the company I work for via MPinet. I’m not sure if they’re doing anything strange that could somehow be causing this issue.

I just went into my Avast firewall to check active connections and firewall logs. When I checked the logs, I saw a lot of stuff like this, starting back from when I moved into this apartment:

This is a small excerpt. The log is full of stuff like this that has been happening constantly since I moved here. I’m using a “Zhone” brand modem provided with the apartment (which I can’t replace) and a new Medialink router (using a wired connection). If this is related, then my question is “Why now?”. This stuff has been going on since the 5th, and unless Google allowed the activity for several weeks, then it may not be related.
As I mentioned above, the issue doesn’t seem to be constant, though it has been going on most of the time since I got home today. I was able to get a successful search through a few minutes ago, but I’ve had no such luck since.
MBAM quick scan:
Nothing found.
OTL + aswMBR logs attached.
