Got sent back to a website twice that won't let you get off of it

My family member went on her e-mail and says she accidentally clicked on a fake E-mail from a fake Ebay and it sent her to the website shown in the picture. And it wouldn’t let her off of it. So I totally ripped out the battery (I know, over dramatic heh) and it started up fine.
I did a quick scan with a up-to-date MBAM and Avast! they found nothing and the computer seemed fine. But when I started up Mozilla Firefox again it had two tabs and on the second tab it was the same website and once again, it would not let us off.

I used Task Manager to get rid of it and it went away. I started Mozilla Firefox again and it had the “Well this is embarrassing” thing that Mozilla usually has when it can’t find websites etc… But other than that, everything was okay.

Is it possible that the same website came up again because I didn’t turn it off via task manager and I just yanked out the battery?

Also,
This has happened several times with the same family member, she keeps accidentally going on websites that won’t let her off of them… Yet, we find no malware when we scan the computer. ???

Will this happen again?
Is this malware that both MBAM or Avast! couldn’t find?
What is this thing? How do I get rid of it if it happens again?

Thanks in advance!

could it be solved if you start upp firefox and when that same site comes up close it and then delete the surf history in mozilla. thats my first suggestion.

my second is to meaby your computer is infected with malware so mayby should try a seciond opions like superantispyware.

http://filehippo.com/download_superantispyware/

if that don’t comes up with anything scan with thrend micro hjackthis and post the reuslt here.

good luck and write back on your progress or if you need more help.

Well without closing my first Firefox (The one with this website on it), I started up another one to see if that website would come up again and it didn’t.
As for the browsing history, we have it so it automatically clears the history whenever you close the browser.
Is it possible that somehow that website DIDN’T give us malware? Because it seems like the type of website that would… Of course my family member said it kept asking for her credit card number, so maybe it could just be a scam instead of malware?

And sorry, right now I don’t want to try any new antivirus programs/scanners, especially if they conflict with Avast! or MBAM.

Thank you for your quick reply.

EDIT: Not sure if this matters, but I did a Quick Scan with “BitDefender QuickScan” (The add-on for Firefox) and it didn’t find anything either.

It just a Javascript loop that keeps popping up a ‘Do you really want to leave?’ message.

Nothing malicious, just obnoxious- avoid the site.

So your saying that is why the website popped up a second time? Or is the Javascript loop why we “couldn’t leave” the website?
Thank you. That makes me feel better if so, because at least it’s not malware.

Will this Javascript thing (Sorry, I’m not very knowledgeable about things like this) make the website come up out of no where again?
Like when we first use Mozilla Firefox (Or any other browser for that matter) will it just randomly show up on the first page instead of the Start Page?

EDIT: The pop-up on the picture I attached that says “Do you want Firefox to save your tabs for the next time it starts?” was from me clicking on the “X” box at the top right of the screen, I’m pretty sure it wasn’t from the website.

When you try to leave the web page (or close the tab) a pop-up appears saying “Do you really want to leave?” That’s Javascript. It’s not a particularly bad pop-up because if you click OK, it does let you leave. Javascript loops on some pages don’t.

If you couldn’t close the tab and you closed Firefox instead, Firefox will reopen your tabs when you restart it, so the page will appear again, if you say ‘yes’ to “Do you want Firefox to save your tabs for the next time it starts?” Close without saving tabs if one of them is annoying you.

Start Firefox in Safe Mode if you keep getting taken back to the annoying site.

EDIT: Typo.

Ok that makes sense. Thanks for your help.

I haven’t been sent back to the website ever since, so I should be okay, right?

Thanks for all you guys’ help.

Hi Misuzu,

One thing you should definitely try and do is educate those that use the computer on how this happens…

For example, every time I check my email, there is a fake bank email (correctly flagged as junk by hotmail). I know that it is completely fake at face value, but I can definitely say that some I know will click the link in it…just because it is to do with a bank…

So an example of this is an email I have currently sitting in junk from a bank known as egg…

-The first thing that I notice is that I don’t/nor have I ever used this bank

  • Next, I am called ‘Valued Customer’ which, if I was a member, I would be called by name…
-Then I am asked to validate my details, something that (I hope) no bank will ask for
-Last, but not least, is the link to which I must go to to to validate my details…

This is the most obvious thing in the email…In plain view, the link is obscured by text, but when you hover over the link, you can see in the bottom of the browser that the link is nothing to do with egg at all…

Yes I’m trying to tell my family members about the email stuff, as much as I know about it anyway. :stuck_out_tongue:
But my family member said she accidentally clicked on the wrong E-mail (I’m pretty sure she knows better than to click on “weird Emails”) and got sent to the wrong website, so I think it was just a accident.

Thanks for all your help guys.
