Online looking for batteries for drill , upon closing out of IE7 there were no files left on my desktop. Should have been many /See .jpg
All that was left was ie7,my computer, recycle bin, my documents.
Went and explored my computer to the desktop and it showed the correct files in explorer,(but they didn’t show on the desktop) plus these weird files that I don’t know where they came from. I had not downloaded anything I’m aware of.
I scanned those individual files with Avast / no threat found.
Opened a new folder called what the heck + moved weird files to there.
Once I did that my desktop files reappeared on the desktop.
Will now do boot time scan.3-5-12 Done /no negative results.
Also did Hijackthis / no negative results
Today 3-23-12
On first use of computer, it was acting strange, (I leave it on at night but no open IE7 or Mozilla pages this time), tried to open an adobe acrobat file/ error message/ see.jpg.
Tried to access Mozilla got a similar error message as if the computer could not get at the.dll files needed.
Tried to download MSN malicious software tool, wouldn’t download/ anyway you get the idea. SNAFU
I tried to do a screenshot of the errors but it indicated there was not enough memory to perform the task, so I took digital images. See attached .jpg files
Ran HJT (assuming you know what Hijackthis is)tried to paste the .txt file to have it analyzed, paste would not work.
In both cases these files were left behind. I scanned them and they show clean/ also 0kb file.
Have you ever seen anything like this?
In my prior encounter with this type file I moved the strange file to it’s own folder and then things seemed better ,this time continued to have problems until setting up an Avast boot time scan + on reboot back to normal.
Are these some kind of files /Virus/malware that after they execute (Is that proper terminology?) then leave these blank files behind?
Sorry I should have mentioned to get the computer working again 3-23-12 I did a boot time scan and upon restart every thing seemed OK.
No negative results.
OK , No replies so far, so maybe my info seems a little convoluted. ;D
These are the files I’m asking about, larger so you can see the contents, ( I’m not sure if the letters are Chinese ,wingding or what font type)
On the left is the gizmo that indicates Windows does not recognize the file type, Note the Zbthumbnails.info is left behind after downloading picture files from my camera and is not recognized.“zoom browser and is 25kb in size”
Has anyone seen files like these ? The ones with 0kb. Recognize the font type? What may have created them?
Any info to clear up my mystery would be greatly appreciated.
Jim M
Thanks Pondus will do.
Was wondering what they are as much as worried IE: infected.
I run a number of cleaners on a regular basis and especially anytime something abnormal occurs.
Hijackthis
CCleaner
spybot
avast of course
AdAware
Microsoft monthly check
occasional online scanners.
Everything I used indicated I was clean.
I’ll break out the malwarebyte update it and attach a log file. Just nice to know I wasn’t just singing in the wind.
Pondus,
Here are the files as requested. No need to respond if Essexboy has been following this post, if not do I need to let him know the files are here?
Again THANKS you guy’s do much good and probably don’t get the recognition.
Jim M
1st mbam log all logs in ANSI format /not sure if requested but trying to be efficient.
hey i would suggest you remove spybot and adaware and use malwarebytes and/or superantispyware. spybot can’t keep up with the malware out there and adaware just using to much computer resourses.
Essexboy,
So I take it you have not seen these type of files before? Any idea of what filetype that is? Looks Chinese to me.
I added the ZBthumbnail file to the picture to show as an example of what a file that windows does not recognize looks like.
So you would understand that I know. I’m aware they are 0kb just can’t understand where they came from.
I doubt they are corrupted camera files because they appeared :
1- on 3-5-12 after shopping online for batteries for an elec drill, when I closed out of IE7 . See my first post what occurred.
I got the problem this day to initially stop causing trouble by putting the weird file in their own folder by them selves.
Then my desktop reappeared as it was before
2- on 3-23-12 the single weird file was on my desktop when I first went to check my computer that day.
As far as I recall no programs were left on overnight other than windows task master.
Both times ( and we are talking different symptoms , see 1st post) I got the problem to go away by performing a boot time scan with avast.
Both times after the scan , avast log showed no problems found.
At present not having any trouble that I can see.
You say (I can see no apparent malware on the system ).
Oh and I have not tried to delete in case someone wanted a copy of the file. If I do I’m guessing I should use some sort of secure delete program ,yes?
Eraser/ Ccleaner etc.
That file is from Sonic Solutions and is legitimate
I wonder if some of the pictures on the site you visited were corrupted or had hidden data on the image which Avast has stripped out during the boot scan
Oh thanks, I thought the DLA designation looked familiar.
Re/ the files They appeared just as they are before running the boot time scan.
Both time they appeared my computer acted up— I tried to figure out what the problem was— then I isolated those files in a separate folder —scanned them with avast by right click menu. After that I did the boot time scan to see if infection was present both time scan came back negative.
If this is a new type of infection do I get to name it ? HA !
Yes I sent one to the Recycle bin and it went . Have not tried to delete from there , as I said if I do delete them I will use a file shredder from some other source IE:/ ccleaner. If it won’t delete from there I will let you know.
So the mystery still stands ? So if it happens again should I do the MBAM, OTL, aswMBR thing before I isolate the weird files and run avast.
Not sure I would be able to, but could try. Nice to know my puters clean. Looking around the board lots of Alureon-K. stuff going on so I’ll look on the bright side + consider myself lucky.
Anyway thanks for your help I think I will take this discussion to Bleeping computer + some other forums to see if anyone has seen these types of files before. I’m one of those who wants to know WHY.
Appreciate it.
